Foul by kicking team on onside kick
« on: December 23, 2017, 05:21:42 PM »
Late 3rd qtr in Allen v Lake Travis game, LT executed a successful onside kick. There was an illegal block before the ball went 10 yards, and a flag was thrown.  LT recovers the kick beyond the 10 yard mark.  Ruling on field:  illegal block on kicking team, 5 yards from spot of foul, Allen's ball 1st and 10.  OOOPS!   It really hurts when Allen goes down and scores a touchdown.

That was really bad. Especially since coach was arguing correctly and umpire gave him a stfu look.

Basic penalty enforcement.  Inconceivable that not a single member of the crew could jump in and get that fixed.

Great pickup by the FJ ruined by poor administration.

Agree with all of you. My phone started getting texts right away from fellow officials.

How can the R just announce "5 yard penalty, and Allen gets the ball" when the foul occurred during the free kick and Lake Travis ended up possessing the ball with no illegal touching. Horrible enforcement. Re-kick it my man

I am guessing that they were thinking same rationale as KCI foul. Not a valid reason, but best I can come up with.

Great call.  Obviously wrong enforcement.  I know these guys well and I’m shocked they kicked this one.

Agree. I think otherwise they worked a solid game.

The dpi on Allen was a tough call.  At full speed I understand the call because the defender had his hands on the back of the receiver.  When you watch it in slow motion, it is obvious the feet got tangled.  We don’t get that luxury though.

Overall I think the crew did well. Certainly carried the R who is obviously not comfortable on the microphone.

No disrespect intended but was that by chance a “Thataboy” assignment?

Agree. Probably an incorrect call but understand what it looked like at full speed.

You are not saying that his apparent uncomfortableness on the microphone means he had to "be carried" are you ?   It was not a "thataboy" assignment.  Many of the crew have previous state championship experience.

For sake of discussion, I believe I heard/read that in the case where the defender gets tangled with receiver and he is "looking back" playing the ball it is nothing, but if he is just chasing or running with defender then he can be guilty of DPI if the feet get tangled.  Based on that philosophy this was a good call.

And yes, JD made a great call on the free kick block.

I guess we could call it a crew saver call since the opposite-side official did not pick it up on the kick away from him

Good point. He had everything coming his way and calmly tossed the flag and kept working.

He’s seen that call on video so I’m sure he immediately knew it was a foul.

Just watched my recording of the game and saw this - that's a big time misapplication mess-up.
