Battlefields to Ballfields
« on: August 10, 2017, 12:23:39 AM »
Got to spend some time with Mike Periera last night. He came by our training class to talk about his new nonprofit Battlefields to Ballfields. The goal is to help veterans become sports officials. He told some great football stories about his time in as the NFL supervisor of officials and his current job as a Fox Sports Football Rules Analyst. Mike is also in new chairman of NASO.

Please check out the website at www.battlefields2ballfields.org. I think this is great idea.

Got to hear alot about his organization last year at the NASO Summit.  Highly interesting initiative from a recruiting/retention perspective.
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

He spoke to us in Indy last winter with the same focus. We have been trying to find some veterans here willing to do it, but we have run into several dead ends. I'm not directly involved so I didn't hear if any eventually joined the program. I think it's a great idea though!
