is it mandatory to have 5 players in between the40 and 50 whenreceiving a kick off?

This rule was deleted in 1996. The overwhelming feeling was that the potential of an onside kick would deter R from leaving their free-kick line "unguarded". The rule was originally put in back in the Teddy Roosevelt era to reduce the opportunities of the "flying wedge".
