A bit of a history question for you old fogies on the board.
I was looking for video of Morris Stroud goaltending (well, attemping) and came across this video:

Len Dawson tells the story of The Late Hit in a game in 1970 where he picks up a first down on a running play that ices the game -- until he's hit late (well after he's down) and his team retaliates.
-- offsetting dead ball personal fouls, so that's no big deal right... but wait, we replay 3rd down?
Clearly he's not upset about an incorrect enforcement, so I guess that was correct back in 1970? When did that change?
