New NFL No Kneel Rule has no teeth
« on: May 23, 2018, 08:41:53 PM »
Unanimous vote to add the rule. Kneel, team owner fined. New York Jets Owner, who voted for the rule, says he'll pay the fines. No players will be fined.

I can imagine those NFL meetings to come up with this joke.

"We need something to appease the fans. Our gates have dropped tremendously."
"How about a rule against kneeling?"
"How about a fine against the owner, not the players?"
"How about the owner decides if the players or player gets fined?"
"We'll have everyone fooled into thinking we really are concerned about this!"
"We'll be heroes!"

Then the Jets Owner says "Screw all of you, I'll pay my fines, not my players!"

It needs teeth.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct flag to start the game. USC on the Head Coach. 15 yard penalty
Coin toss is ruled disqualified
The team with no foul receives and chooses which goal to defend.

Second half

Unsportsmanlike Conduct Foul on the Head Coach. Automatic Disqualification. 15 yard penalty
The team with no foul receives the second half kickoff and chooses the goal they wish to defend.

Ownership fined and the Head Coach fined.

That is a rule with teeth and a bite. It puts the offending team at a disadvantage, ejects the Head Coach to start the second half and if the owner wants to pay both fines, increases the cost of supporting the kneelers. Both fines are to be substantial.

I think this is absolutely disgusting and appalling. The NFL today bowed down to every racist in America by passing this. To me it is incredible that allowing domestic abusers/wife-beaters/rapists to play in the NFL is A-ok but somebody kneeling during the national anthem and everybody loses it.

The solution is simple:  Keep the teams in the locker room (or tunnel) until the anthem has been played.  They can stand, kneel, or (whatever) all they want.

"The answer is 'money'.  What's your question?"

Heard a sensible adjustment from Michael Wilbalm:

Retain current requirement that ALL players are EXPECTED to be on the field and show appropriate respect to the National anthem, as it is played.

Players have the option of staying in the locker room while the anthem is played, to avoid any personal difference.

Any player who is on the field during the playing of the National anthem, and chooses to act disrespectfully, will automatically be disqualified from participating in that game.

Teams will retain the right to sanction players for being disqualified and failing to participate in that game, to whatever extent that particular team deems appropriate.

Seems to make sense, as the decision to behave disrespectfully is made unilaterally by the individual player, the consequence resulting from that decision causing damage to the Team, is made by the team, and the spectators, paying for the privileged of observing a contest are not burdened by being forced to observe excessive drama, unrelated to the game they have paid to watch.

Players retain all their previous options to register their grievances with whatever social policies or practices they perceive in whatever public/private venues available, outside their performance expected by their employer.

This would add a consequence to deciding to behave in a manner, costing the loss of service, to the team, of the deciding player.  The sanction (fine, suspension, etc.) would be an individual Team decision, based on the specific Team's perception of loss of service damage incurred.

The US Constitution (Amendment 1) prohibits, "abridging the freedom of speech", it does not address, insure or guarantee the absence of consequences resulting from such behavior and decisions.

Since our earliest days, sporting contests have been intended to determine superiority of the contestants based solely on individual talents and abilities that are tested by the specific event.  They have always been intended to avoid external attributes unrelated to the direct nature of the contested sporting event, such as Politics, Religious preference, cultural differences or other factors not having a direct reference to the specific sport being contested.

...so why play the anthem at all? Is that not a political or cultural decision? The vast majority of the world doesn't play the anthem before a regular game, they save it for occasional showpiece events.

That is a decision, "The vast majority of the world" has every right to determine, each for themselves, that is a normally accepted behavior by each other member of that majority.

The issue is one of acknowledging the expression of well earned respect, or where that sentiment is absent, allowing those so inclined the opportunity to pay their chosen means of respect without enduring competing disruption.  It's not, or shouldn't be a big deal, and has most often been taught, and passed down, by caring parents as part of their instructional responsibilities.

I swore not to touch this thread with a 10-foot pole, but I don't think this is correct. I dont watch a lot of soccer, but the games I have I have always seen introductions where the teams come out with little kids holding their hands and carrying little banners. I never understood what all that was about, but whatever. They all come out, a big huge banner is held by a team of 4 in the middle of the field with both teams on either side of it. After that, the anthems of both teams play. Seems too flawless to be a one-off activity.

I also DO watch a good bit of Aussie Football and they most certainly play the Australian anthem before each game.

So just factually, I dont think this statement is correct.

Anthems are played in international soccer games, between two nation teams (England vs. Spain, for instance). It is generally not played before club matches, even if it's Liverpool vs. Real Madrid (although you will hear You'll Never Walk Alone...), excepting a final or some other special occasion. They might play the Champions League Anthem (if that's where they are), but not national anthems.

Remember not so long ago that teams were not out there for the anthem? Then alas the nfl was paid to have the players out there.
I strongly think there was big corporate money involved with this ruling. - but would you blame them? ratings far down and corporate folks not getting their money's worth in this dying sport where a typical game is (yawn) 3.25-3.5hours long.

Conversely, while i'm not a big fan, the most popular game in the world has (at most) 2-hour matches and I guarantee today's champions league game attracted at least 2x that of the super bowl.

Love football, but truely sad what this game has become.

The "issue" is not about money, corporate sponsors or viewership, those are just side effects and distractions.  There are "Life Lessons", we ALL have to learn, that WE ALL just don't do, and places WE ALL just don't go FOR ANY REASON, without expecting, automatic, serious consequences.

We (at least in this Country) have the right to insult someone's mother, but choosing to do so includes a CLEAR expectation of getting "punched in the mouth".  The same applies to using the American Flag and/or Our National Anthem as a phony prop for drawing attention to WHATEVER CAUSE we might personally be concerned about.

All spotlights generate both light and heat, and a very select few draw FAR more heat than light, and ALWAYS produce FAR MORE CONSEQUENCES that will NOT be able to be overcome.

It's not rocket science, when looking for assistance to dramatize WHATEVER cause you may be concerned with, it's wise to avoid those places clearly marked "DON'T GO THERE".  There are ALWAYS alternative paths available, for YOU to choose from.

respectfully disagree.
if we dont think "the official beer of the NFL"; and/or "the "official soft drink of the NFL"; and/or "the official XYZ of the NFL" is displeased with -20% viewership, we may be missing the boat.

Absolutely, 100% about money. - which may not be a bad thing, but still about money

Regardless if I agree or disagree with these displays, in my personal/private opinion, when I go to work for 'corporate USA' with a fortune 50 company, there's no such thing as 'taking a knee' et al if it is not allowed..

FACT:
In week 16, of the +/-1500 nlf roster players who 'protested', there was 20.
(interestingly, about 10 played for SEA.)

what if he camers didnt zoom in on those taking a knee?
what if espn.com didnt give a breakdown of 'who took a knee' this week'?

I am probably the only one on this board that was thrown out because we Stood for the National Anthem.

Movie Woodstock. Grant Heights Housing Base. Special Services warned us that the movie would be stopped and anyone standing would be escorted from the building. Jimi started playing, the football team stood. Movie stopped, lights went up and we were walked out.

You have to be a little smarter as a military brat. Always team up with someone that will keep you out of trouble. Both of the Base Commander's Sons were on the team and were kicked out with us. My Dad and Colonel Coder were in the theater. Our girlfriend's were waiting with the next show's tickets in hand. We didn't stand the second time.

Our simple protest about Viet Nam and the fact that some of us would be drafted with a few not coming back.

Sorry, could not resist, I usually try to stay out of the US politics related discussions...

That's a really smart idea, that works with most things far beyond the reach of YOUR headlights.

More than others (anywhere) we encourage and support the absolute right to "speak your mind" and call attention to your grievance, whatever it may be.  Like everything else in life, there are some exceptions about what you choose to use to dramatize your problem.  Two things at the top of that short list, are including something derogatory about someone's mother, and using our Flag as a derogatory Prop.

They are both simply places, "You JUST DON'T go".  There are a Bazillion other "Props" at your disposal, go find one and use it as you see fit, to call attention to your grievance, but understand nothing in life is GUARANTEED to be consequence free.

Our Flag means too many seriously positive things to, too many Americans to be publicly shamed and embarrassed to highlight ANY personal slight or perceived problem. Our Flag symbolizes the objective we still pursue and the sacrifices so many have endured to keep that pursuit on target.  We're not quite there yet, but our Flag serves as the beacon that keeps us on course, correcting our mistakes and inspiring our continued efforts to reach our objective.

I am glad to see a lot of the police/fire organizations pulling away from the NFL “appreciation “days

I have not watched any part of an NFL game in 2years and don’t plan on it any time soon

A simple question.....the NBA and MLB play Our National Anthem prior to all their games. All the players and officials stand during the playing of Our National Anthem. There never seems to be any discussion/debate/whatever about not doing so.

Is that because :

(A) all of the above love their country and respect Our National Anthem;

(B) have a contract that prohibits doing anything else;

(C) all of the above.

IMHO, the NFL should look at other sports and emulate them.

IMHO, the Red Sox will win the AL East. tiphat:
