There are still a few players (usually linemen) who are wearing the old style hip pads, that stick up a bit from and out of the pants. My thought is if these pads are soft and they are shoved into their pad pocket as far as possible, the player should not be penalized for an equipment rule violation. Am I wrong in my thinking?

If I'm thinking of the correct pads, they're unaltered and worn as the manufacturer designed them to be worn. No problem.

They are legal.
