Free kick after multiple dead ball fouls
« on: November 20, 2017, 08:01:14 PM »
After Team A scores a TD and AFTER the try is successful there are multiple UNS fouls on the receiving team.  How far can the ball be placed for the ensuing kickoff?  Can it be placed at the R-10, the R-5?  Where does the receiving team lineup?

The 10 yard neutral zone stays and can be in R's EZ. Use the chains to establish R's restraining line and everything else about a free kick is the same. I have seen this once on a free kick after an awarded fair catch.

6-1-1. Free kick lines are always 10 yards apart. It goes on to state that the ball is kicked from the 40/20(safety) unless moved by penalty, or the spot of the fair catch or awarded fair catch. The rule mandates that the lines are always 10 yards apart. It does not prohibit the 10 yard neutral zone from going into the EZ.

True, but both the philosophy of the neutral zone and the practical application of having a 10 yard neutral zone causes me to wonder how an imaginary free kick line in the EZ would have any benefit whatsoever, as any ball breaking the plane is dead on arrival.
By philosophy, I'm referring to 6-2-6. I realize that refers to scrimmage kicks, but the fact that the neutral zone can only be expanded in the field of play must be important in some way.
By practical application, what benefit is there to establishing a free kick line in the EZ?

If you really insist on rule support, for even the rarest of hypothetical situations, you might consider NFHS 1-1-6, which gives the Referee authority to rule on ANY situations/circumstances, "not specifically" covered in the rules relying on his judgment and sense of good sportsmanship to arrive at a practical and rational adjustment.

2-28-1. There was a year when a rule was passed that stated the neutral zone on a free kick could NOT extend into the end zone.

Along came the "WHAT IF" P_S P_S POLICE. Their concern was :
K punts from deep in their end zone with LOS at K's1.
R makes fair catch @ K's 2 ::).
R, now A, decides it would be a nice time to free kick ::)
K, now B, send in 2 7' basketball players to stand at goal line and try to block kick ::) ::).

Returning the neutral zone to 10 yards and into end zone wouldn't give K an advantage on recovering a potential onside kick, as once the kick broke the goal line plane, it would become dead and a touchback.

yEs: We agreed and stretched to NZ back to 10 the following year yEs:.

TTR (things to remember) :

 (1) As K's free kick grows closer to R's end zone, the chance of an onside kick grows greater - be ready.

 (2) While penalties halve the distance, the 25 yard award for untouched going OOB does not. If K line is inside R's 25, that option is no longer available.

 (3) There is no rule that requires the free kick to go 10 yards - if it doesn't, it's just like a punt. If near the goal line, just knocking the ball from the tee and falling on it is enough.

Don't think it can't happen,  one more foul and it would have been inside the B-10.  The kicker dribbled the kick and it was picked up by a kicking team member on the 2 yard line. It was 1st and 10 for R from the R-2 yard line.
