Ineligible downfield
« on: October 27, 2018, 11:52:13 AM »
Try for point.  Team B is called for encroachment, Team A accepts so the try is from the 1 1/2 yard line. Team A throws a legal forward pass which is caught by A88 in the back of the end zone for a successful 2 pt. try.  However, tackle A55 was 5 yards deep in the end zone when QB released the ball.  Can we have ineligible downfield on this play from the 1 1/2 yard line?  Rule states we give the ineligible to the expanded NZ which is 2 yards "in the field of play", the field of play is between the goal lines.

Ineligible Receiver Downfield!
The neutral zone may be expanded following the snap up to a maximum of 2 yards behind the defensive line of scrimmage, in the field of play, during any scrimmage down.  2-28-2
The field of play is the area within the boundary lines and the gaol lines. 2-10-2
The neutral zone shall not be expanded into the end zone. 6-2-6
The neutral zone may not be expanded into the end zone. 2.28.2 SITUATION A

So are we saying if we have a snap from the B- 1 1/2 yard line, we can't have ineligibles downfield?
We are going to allow ineligibles to be running around in the middle of the end zone on a legal forward pass that crosses the NZ?

No, we’re saying that the NZ “only” expands 1 1/2 yards on that play. Offensive linemen running around in the EZ are definitely illegally downfield.

OK that makes sense.  So if we have another foul by B and we replay from the 3/4 yard line, then the lineman can only go 3/4 of a yard and cannot go into the end zone at all?

Correct, cannot expand the neutral zone into the end zone.
