You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make that son of a gun drink.

Apparently I have been enforcing holding by team A in the backfield wrong all these years. JV head coach informed my crew last night that the foul should be enforced from the previous spot like in the NFL.

Once again, coach gets the rules "as seen on tv"

Sadly, I can give you examples of officials in this state who do the same thing...

Again a "new" old rule:

"That wasn't a horse collar! He only grabbed jersey, not pads!"

"That's what the rule says now, coach"

"Horse collar is just pads. We're playing by NFHS rules!"

"Yes, we are coach"

"I'm going to look up the rule and show it to you RIGHT NOW!"

"You do that coach"

He never got back to me for some reason.

It's not defensive pass interference if he pushes the receiver out of bounds.

Last friday was told by a coach that the center can be up to 8 yards downfield on a forward pass, and I should re-check the rule book.  hEaDbAnG

And I had a coach tell me earlier this season that the linemen couldn't be even one inch downfield.

Wish they'd make up their minds.

That depends on whether he is an offensive or defensive coach.

Had a good friend at the D-II level tell us every week the offense was holding. That changed when he moved to coach the o-line.

Had a DPI under 2 to go in game on an incomplete pass, A was winning by 6, coach asked doesn't the new rule this year let me get the choice to start the clock on the ready.

Last Friday night, coach asked crew to be mindful and watch for "forceful intent" by the opposing team...

Sadly, this works both ways sometimes. I heard a story from a coach Friday night. He had been over into a neighboring district, and the WH kept waving off the obviously successful try. He finally called TO and asked him what was the problem. the WH said, "The kicks are too high. The rulebook says the ball has to go THROUGH the uprights." If it's a lie, he told it..
