And other good sayings
« on: May 11, 2017, 01:02:28 PM »
Bossman's post saying "a field goal is a punt that can score points" got me thinking about other good sayings that can simplify the rules or take away from confusion when trying to apply them to situations.

The only good one I have is about force:  Whoever put it into the endzone is responsible for getting it out.

Anyone else?

Not exactly correct.  What about a kick, when it goes into end zone (untouched) it is a dad ball

In Fed, ANY kick that crosses the plane of the goal line, touched or untouched, is a dead ball, except if it a try or FG attempt.

Rule 2-24-2 states:
A kick ends when a player gains possession or when the ball becomes dead while not in player possession.

Many find it easier to remember it this way:
A kick is a kick, is a kick, is a kick, and, any kick remains a kick until the kick ends by rule!!!

Or the more popular Short version:
A kick is a kick, is a kick, is a kick....
SEE everything that you CALL, but; Don't CALL everything you SEE!
Never let the Rules Book get in the way of a great ball game!

On multiple changes of possession and the down ends inbounds ... A-B-A = Ready for Play.

Fed ... B gains possession of A's loose ball (excluding a legal kick) and advances 15 yards and fumbles, A recovers and is downed. Clock starts on the "Ready" (A-B-A = Ready for Play)

Teach a kid to block, and he'll eventually figure out how to hold, teach a kid to hold and he'll never bother to learn to block.

Was the kick muffed or caught and fumbled  ??? ??? ??? ?

...If it was a forward pass would you have ruled it complete ??
....If yes, the kick was caught and fumbled ??
....If no, it was muffed !

It's much easier to return to spot of recovered muff (don't forget to add a few seconds to the clock as it should have stopped with recovered muff) then to deal with an

There is no such thing as fair when it comes to football or sports or even life in general.  So stop saying not fair unless you are talking about the county fair which is full of rides and animal shows and games of chance which by the way are all rigged to not be fair!

Best thing about the fair (besides the food) is watching people. They make coaches seem almost normal!

  VERY GOOD POINT!!

    COACH : ".....that's not fair :o??"
    OFFICIAL : "....but it's the rule 8] !!"
    COACH : ".....then the rule's not fair >:( >:( !"

We all are faced with rules and laws that we don't feel are fair. We have the following choices:

  (1) write to our congressman/ police chief/ rules committee rep;
  (2) realize that these same rules/laws affects all others, too;
  (3) grown ,moan ,rant , rave , and develop HBP or ulcers.

Similarly, he ain't a passer till he passes it.

Had to talk a coach off the ledge once after his QB was on the losing side of an attempted block while they were running a wildcat formation play. QB was lined up in the slot, ran a blocking route on a sweep play, never actually had the ball.... that's not roughing the passer, coach.

"SEE THE BALL BEFORE YOU BLOW YOUR WHISTLE !!!!"

We all have probably became "eager tweeters" at one time or another and have thought the play had ended only to be greeted with the fact that it hadn't.

"BE A GOOD DEAD-BALL OFFICIAL !!!!"

A lot can happen after the ball becomes dead and very little of it is good. Pushes and shoves caught then can prevent punches and kicks later.

"DON'T BE A WALKING RULE BOOK WAITING TO HAPPEN !!!!"

See all that you call, but don't call all that you see. Our job is to keep the game safe ,fair and under control; NOT to see how many flags we can throw.

"BE SURE OUR 'TEAM' IS READY,TOO !!!!"

When the hurry-up offense is in, we need to hurry BUT we need to be sure all officials are in position before the RFP.

I may be able to think of more after I drink my clam-broth coca......

Being a "good" dead ball official is not enough anymore. You've got to be a GREAT dead ball official. To me, that's as important as rules knowledge and application.

Being a "good" dead ball official is not enough anymore. You've got to be a GREAT dead ball official. To me, that's as important as rules knowledge and application.

Let's say we kickoff at 7:30 and the game ends at 10:00.  That's 150 minutes.  Minus 20 minutes for halftime leaves 130 minutes of officiating.
If the teams run a total of 135 plays, and the ball is live for 10 seconds during each play, we have 22.5 minutes of "live action" out of 130 minutes of game time.
In that case, we're officiating a live play about 17% of the time and dead ball officiating about 83% of the time.

Agree with Rulesman - we can really help ourselves by being great, rather than merely good, during all of that dead ball time.  Coaches and players will know the difference.
