Title: Best Shoes to use for Grass and Turf
Post by: Storm13 on July 25, 2018, 09:58:26 AM
I am a new official to football and need help figuring out the best shoes to get.  I will be working about half my games on grass and half on turf.  Thanks

Addidas Turf Hogs work well on both unless it's particularly wet on the grass

in my opinion it may depend on if you state allows you to wear white on your shoes.

I got some Nike Zoom that I plan to use on turf this year. SOOOOO comfortable. Quite a bit of white in them, though so like others have mentioned if you have to do pure black then those are out.

We can have some white but are asked to keep it to a minimum.

not a personal knock on anyone as they have no control over this but for States and/or Assns not to allow white is so outdated.
Goodness, anymore it's darn difficult to find all black shows - vs 15 yrs ago when all black was maybe the norm for HS.

yea in WV for the first time in history we are allowed to wear "predominately Black shoes with some white accents."  With that in mind, here are the shoes that i purchased for the upcoming season.  I emailed them tot he state office to make sure i was ok to order these.  Got these for less than $50 including shipping.

I have these as well, purchaseofficials.com has them. Though I bought mine on Amazon. They are the UA Deception Trainer.

I ordered another pair of Boombah Epic Turf in all black. Great shoe, lightweight. I wear 13. It is on clearance for 39.99. Check out boombah.com then select Clearance, mens' footwear, men's turf

I'm a fan of the Under Armour Ultimate Turf Trainer Field Shoe, which I got from purchaseofficials.com. I like them for both turf and grass, good grip and plenty of cushion.

Welcome to our forum, Maineac, by your handle - I guess they still call it that - I assume that you ,too , must be from the grand state of Maine tiphat:. I hope you find Refstripes both enjoyable and informative. While the Under Armor shoe is quite suitable for turf and grass, you may wish a journey to LL Bean's for games north of the Androscoggin River or beyond Columbus Day :). PM me ,if you wish, as I'll be making my rounds to all the chapters next week. AYUH

In one week?  You are definitely not in Texas.   ;D

In one week?  You are definitely not in Texas.   ;D
Sunday - Bangor -10 miles from home
Monday - Winslow - 60 miles
Tuesday - Saco - 135 miles
Wends - Augusta- 90 miles....and home again....

Having spent time in Texas during the late 60's, I realize it's huge size. As I recall, in the Texan constitution is the ability to separate into 5 states if they should choose.  :o I've been told by the guys from Alaska that much of the travel of teams and officials is by plane.

In my opinion, the sole pattern is good for grip on turf but not enough for grass if slightly damp.

A number of our officials use that model of Addidas but with the firm ground sole which works for turf and softer grass

This looks likea cleat to me.  IMO, no official in any outdoor sport should be wearing a cleat.

Why would you say "no official in any outdoor sport should be wearing a cleat."

Especially in football. One it looks bad, IMO.  2, if you step on a hand with cleats, you could do some damage.  i dont want that either.

Looks a lot worse when an official falls head over their tail because they don't have sufficient grip IMO.

They may look like cleats however we are finding more and more sites with turf insisting on this type of footwear.

Hear's an example: http://packmeadow.co.uk/footwear/

BTW, I don't know any official who has ever stood on a player

I have one pair of cleats I've held onto because there are still two fields in our area that are closer to being a pasture than a field.  A turf shoe won't cut it as these fields were basically built in holes, get little sun, and stay perpetually damp.  I've not called at either one in several years but one never knows the vagaries of The Arbiter.

I have a pair of New Balance 950v2 Mid-Cut Field Shoes.

You can get them in wide, which I must have.

They are extremely light weight.

I have some mid-cut hiking boots too.  I like the extra support.

I have had good luck with other New Balance shoes and boots.

They are based on a shoe New Balance developed for the US Army physical training.

I wear these New Balance turf shoes on both turf and grass. Very comfortable, good support.

I got my hands on a pair of Under Armour Turf Trainers a couple of weeks back.  These shoes are incredible.

(https://underarmour.scene7.com/is/image/Underarmour/1292146-001_DEFAULT?scl=1&fmt=jpg&qlt=80&wid=612&hei=650&size=551,585&cache=on,off&bgc=f0f0f0&resMode=sharp2)

I've used them on dry grass, and on wet and dry artificial turf, and love them.  I haven't tried them on wet grass, as I don't relish the idea of trying to keep that white bright after getting mud off of it...
