Title: Bean Bag Question...
Post by: Official_21 on February 18, 2016, 09:22:28 AM
Since I am looking to get back into officiating next year, I was wondering if TASO still uses white bean bags or if another color is allowed?

Can use black or white. The entire crew must use the same color.

What's the logic of the whole crew using the same?  As in why does it matter?

Same reason we all wear the same color pants, same hats (outside the referee), and black shoes...it's called a uniform. That means everyone the same. It does look better.

Officials are the only ones who care. Fans, players and coaches couldn't care less.

Must or should? Do you have a mechanics manual reference?

TASO 5 Man Manual - "must". Page 5.
TASO 4 Man Manual - "must". Page 5.

At the SV level, I have not heard of anyone being chastised for not coordinating Bean Bags. Just seeing the required number of smiling faces who are scheduled actually showing up and on-time is enough for me.

I think we have much, much bigger fish to fry than to worry much about bean bags for more than a millisecond.

Depends on if you wear your bean bag on your belt or keep it in your pocket. Uniformity speaks for you, whether you want to believe it or not.

Agreed, may not be that big of a deal... But it's an easy thing to have if you want to continue down the road of  being taken seriously as a crew

My philosophy: we have enough to deal with already, so why even chance the idea that someone could see that when most officials have multiples of everything anyway? Out of 5,6,7 guys on a crew, I'm willing to bet there are 8 same colored bean bags.

Seriously, it isn't that big of a deal.  Yes, you should all have the same.  If someone forgets their bean bag and has to use the wrong color, seriously, who gives a flying fart in fairlyland.  It just isn't all that important.

To answer the original question, wear what the rest of your crew wears.  To cover all the bases, buy two white and two black.  What are they, $5?  If you don't have one the same color, someone else probably does, but if not, play the game.

Ask TxSkyBolt.  I left my white hat on my dresser when we went to Midland for a playoff game a few years back so we all wore black hats.  We managed!
