Would this play still be legal?

used by the Giants in the 1930's:

HOF Center Mel Hein would be on the end of the line of scrimmage, thus an eligible receiver. He would (direct) snap it to the QB who passed it back to him (apparently quickly right at the line.)

I guess the object of the play was deception because the QB would then fake a pass to a back while Hein "jogged" downfield with the ball, unnoticed for 10, 20 or 30 yards.

By virtue of being a center, his number would make him ineligible by numbering.

For this to work, he would have to report to the referee prior to each play he lines up in a spot that would require him to be eligible. The referee would announce this each and every play.

The offense would also have to make sure to confirm to the other requirements....7 on the line and every player between those at the ends, who are on the line of scrimmage having an ineligible number (or reporting as ineligible),

If he does that, as long as he's on the line of scrimmage, he allowed by rule to snap the ball.
