I've had this happen twice. First time was a JV coach whom I don't think really had a clue. I explained that he would be kicking both halves and I was asking if he that he wanted to defer giving him several chances to change his mind.

Second time the coach chose to defer. Then he chose to defend a goal to start the second half, " I'll take the wind in the third and my defense in the fourth." Opposing coach's eyes got as big as saucers when he was asked if he wanted to receive. That is exactly how the game worked out.

As much as we tend to prompt coaches/captains at the coin toss, I don't think I've ever honestly asked after halftime of the team that has the choice -- because the team that has the choice wants to receive, so it's only asking the kicking team which way they want to kick, and then only as a courtesy because they'll want to kick from the scoreboard end.

What he likely meant was: “I want the ball in the third and the wind in the fourth.”  That used to be pretty common in the pre-defer days.

They actually won the toss and deferred. I was a sub as LJ on this crew. The WH actually told my to ask the coach what his choice was.

We always ask coming back from halftime, just to prevent any chance of confusion.  "Coach, you're receiving, right?"  Never had a coach say otherwise, but just in case...

Regarding the OT coin toss, this occurred last year in a game that ended in a tie....

HC : "Ref, I'm new at this, what happens now?? Do just kickoff and play ??? ??? ?"
ME : "No, each team will get a series of downs from the 10 yard line and a chance to score yEs:."
HC : "How do we decide who goes first  ??? ??? ??? ?"
ME : "I'll have a coin toss with the captains and the winner gets to choose 8]. "
HC : " What's the best choice :o ??? :o ?" I was beginning to feel sorry for him :-[ :-[...
ME : " Well, I look at it like batting last in an extra-inning game, you know what you need to do to win by going on D first 8]"
HC : "Ayuh, spect that makes sense..." Looking at his captain, he sez' "So if we win the toss we'll go on offense!!"

CAPT : As I escort him to midfield : "That ain't what you told coach to do ,was it mister :o ?"

ME : "You just listen to your coach,son  yEs: 8] :o ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :puke:"
