what happens to the ensuing kickoff when the last play of the quarter or half results in a safety?

At the end of the 1st or 3rd, flip the field and kick from the 20. At the end of the 2nd, the half is over, normal second half choices take over. At the end of the 4th, either the game is over or you go to over time depending on the score.

Edit: I gotta be more careful which section I'm in. I thought I was on the NCAA board. I assume it would be the same for NFHS, but I don't know.

No, you've pretty much got it for NFHS, too.  The period is over, so you either flip the field to kick from the 20, or it's the end of the half, or it's the end of the game.

just so im clear...if the safety occurs at the end of the half its too bad for the benefitting team as far as the kickoff goes, even though they are scheduled to recieve as per the coin toss?

Correct.  Just like a field goal on the last play of the half doesn't mean that B/R is automatically going to receive the 3rd quarter kickoff, same with a safety.  Kick will be from the K40, barring any succeeding spot fouls such as dead ball or USC.  Or a foul during the scoring play that K decides to enforce as a succeeding spot foul, I guess.

If a foul causes the safety, we do NOT extend the period for the free kick either...

As Bossman stated, a penalty that results in a safety would not qualify for an untimed down (3-3-4-b5). Remember , too, that there is NO "carryover" rule for penalties that cause a safety...IE.. O-holding in EZ = safety, with free kick from 20, NOT from the 10 after the penalty enforcement. It was felt the safety , in itself, was penalty enough.
