National Federation Discussion / Re: Fair Catch

So, do all here agree that K cannot legally contact R behind the NZ after they signal for a fair catch?
A fair catch BEHIND the LOS is invalid (2-9-4a). Only the receiver giving a valid fair catch signal is afforded protection (6-5-3). Sorta' like no DPI on contact with an eligible receiver behind LOS/

National Federation Discussion / Re: Clinc Conversation Topics

if the coaches don't know what their options are, i don't feel it is our place to tell them....UNLESS ASKED....thier lack of knowledge of the rules is not our problem....they have rules books

To that end, when they ask for an option, we also need to be aware of what those options are -- thus, clinic discussion topics to make sure we know when to allow and refuse options. For example, A scores a TD and is lined up for the try when B56 jumps early and ends up in the backfield before the snap. Coach yells from the sideline, "I want that enforced on the kickoff!!" ... Sorry, coach, not this time.

I would strongly suggest to state that the rules writers at all levels, whatever position they hold, are grandly assisted by Attorneys these days.

This was a 2004 change, so something probably happened during the 2003 season.

Thanks, Kalle! Now I don’t have to look for it tonight.
It would still be nice to get some direction as to what constitutes, “…high and deep…”

Coaches are the reason many arcane rules exist in the first place... kind of funny that they have made it so complex trying to stop their fellow coaches from doing things to get an advantage.

This is much more likely to be relevant at the HS level instead of NCAA (scrimmage kick not crossing NZ) but I've had a play happen where it went straight up, was caught by A one yard behind NZ, and then he just pitched the ball (that he assumed to be a dead ball at that point) to his sideline; I would think it's not rare, but maybe just uncommon that in a situation like that, B could come racing up to giving a FC signal. Just have to be alert and process what happens, and where.
