I was not working the game as an official but instead as a scout for a D-I college program.  I was there to look at a linebacker but saw Jason Elam kick a 57 yarder for Brookwood HS, near Atlanta. We offered him but he opted for Hawaii instead, real smart kid! I believe he went on to tie Dempsey's NFL record, Is that correct AB?

3 seconds left in the game as Jersey Village (Houston area), was about to attempt a FG from the opponent's 45 yard line to win the game. The left tackle false started causing the kick to be from the 50. Unbelievably, the kicker nailed it with room to spare ending the game. Pretty amazing.

9th Grade Game, Westminster vs. Marist  (Georgia). Kid booted a 49 yard FG with 3 seconds to go to win the game.

1st year of doing varsity ball, Kid hit the state record 59 yarder. Funny thing is afterward he shanked 2 extra points,

Not a FG, but this past saturday I saw a kid on a kickoff in a 6-man game(kickoff from the A-30 and the field is 80-yd) kicked it about 10 yards out of the EZ.

This last week in an 8th grade game 2nd qtr running out an A on B's 23 I hear coach call for fg team.  I thought no way I heard that right, on comes the tee kid drills a 40 yd fg with room to spare.  The other teams coach says, I don't think our varsity kicker has that strong of a leg. It was impressive for an 8th grader.

When I was a sophomore in high school, we played a team with a kicker who split the uprights on every kickoff. Each time, it looked like he would have made it from another 15 yards back.

I was LJ and had a great view after snap tackle key...

Unsure about the longest, but I recall vividly the "scariest" .

SCENE : State championship game - early 1980's

I was the back judge on a 5 man crew, a sunny November day, Stearns led Winthrop by 2 with 0:05 to go.

(1) Winthrop was preparing to try a 37 yard field goal;
(2) field goals in Maine were rare back then (musta' been the gravitional pull  :P);
(3) the LJ & I headed to our positions under the pipes;
(4) I asked : "Have you ever done this before?"
(5) He said : "NOPE, hope kick goes your way :o ."
(6)The sun was in ours eyes, we were both  :o :o;
(7)my silent prayer: "Please send the kick his way pray:; ."
(8)The kick barely made it to the endzone ;D ;D.
(9) The Stearns players,coaches & fans celebrated aWaRd aWaRd aWaRd.
(10) I wiped sweat from my brow ::)  - it was a cold day.

Morale of story : If you should be called upon to call a kick, it doesn't hurt to go under the pipes in pre-game as the kickers practice. IMHO, it give you the same feeling of confidence a plate ump gets from watching warm up pitches prior to the start of a game.

Instead of being the guy that hopes the play goes the other way, be the guy that WANTS the play to come his way.  Running play, passing play, or kicking play - be the guy that wants to make the critical call.

One that involves the ball going over the pylon in a critical situation and you have to decide was it in the end zone or out of bounds.   :thumbup

Agree 100%, Robert, I normally like challenges. During our regular season back then I was always the R or U and this expected call was to be totally out of my element. Studying the BJ duties, I should have considered the possibility and prepared. I didn't...I lucked out...BUT I'll be ready now -along with Mr. umpire - to call a free kick from a fair catch!!!
