Scrimmage Kick/Punt behind the LOS
« on: August 28, 2014, 08:20:12 PM »
Just leaving a lower level high school game.  Need a quick reminder or help.

4th and 8 from K's 30 yard line.

K22 punts the ball high into the air. Ball lands at K's 33 then bounces backwards to K's 26 where K33 picks it up.

Can K33 advance the ball?  If yes and he reaches the line to gain then it is 1st and 10 for K and a new series.

I know under NCAA rules once it is grounded past the LOS and K recovers it is dead.  Been a dad the last couple of years so focused on college rules and not so much in the NFHS rules.

I want to say looking at books 6-2-3.  Also see a case play but says R muffs the ball and it goes back behind the LOS and K advances. My understanding is no matter how it gets behind the line then K amy advance.

?????
Thanks

K can advance and reach the line to gain.  Also since a new series was awarded following a legal kick the clock will start on the snap.

Right key difference between R touching and not touching is this:

IF R touches the kick beyond the LOS and K recovers ANYWHERE in the field of play = new series for K. They can only advance the kick if recovered behind the LOS.

IF R DOES NOT touch the kick and K recovers behind the LOS they must advance past the LOS for a first down. If K touches beyond the LOS it's first touching and R may elect to take the ball at the spot (assuming all other rules for first touching).

A scrimmage kick recovered behind the LOS by either team may be advanced.

And remember that K can do anything they want with the ball if they recover it behind the LOS - they can run it, pass it, or kick it again.

Here is another version of a the play.  4th and 8 from K's 30.  K22 gets off a short high punt with strikes the ground at K's 40 where we have first touching by K.  In attempting to recover the ball, R1 muffs it back behind the line of scrimmage, where it is legally picked up and advanced for a first down by K.

Does K have a first down and a new series, or does R still have the choice of taking the ball at the spot of first touching?

Team R will choose to take the ball at the spot of first touching by K. R is allowed to accept the results of the play or take the ball at the spot of first touching. A penalty by R would have negated this option.

FIFY.

A scrimmage kick recovered in the LOS by either team may be advanced.

See Football Fundamental VI.2

A scrimmage kick recovered in or behind the neutral zone may be advanced by K or R.
