I'm an umpire and I'm confused (and a bit amused) by the umpires and snickers references, but what does it mean?

Often at the High School level, Umpires tend to trend toward the hefty side.

The running joke is that they always need to be eating  sNiCkErS.

And in the college ranks and the NFL as well.  Umpires have traditionally been the larger guys - less need to run and more need to withstand hits.  Having a Snickers or two handy helps keep them in shape.
