Touchback...no...yes
« on: July 13, 2018, 01:14:13 PM »
k17 punting from his own endzone.  Punt is high and wobbly and R9 attempts to field it but the ball bounces off his shoulder pad and into K's end zone.  K17 sees the entire R team running for the ball and just falls on it in the end zone.

White Hate has  safety but Linesman has Touchback.  Line Judge runs in and says Touchback, but White hat says his call is right... safety for R.

Touchdown?  For whom?
I don't know Fed rules, but that makes no sense, if they are anything like NCAA.  The impetus is from Team A's kick, even though it was muffed by Team B.  Team A is responsible for the ball being behind their own goal line when it is declared dead.  In NCAA, that's a safety.  I'd be surprised if it isn't the same for Fed, but...

For some reason, I'm thinking touchback since this is a kick

It would be a touchback if R had muffed the grounded kick.  Since it appears it was not grounded, then the force putting it into K's endzone is the kick...safety.

Always the SAME question, "Did the kick end?" (Did somebody gain possession?  if not it's still a kick).  When YOU recover YOUR kick in YOUR End Zone, it's going to be a safety.

Safety. But if the kick had been grounded, then bounced off of muffed by R and into Ks end zone it would be a touchback for K.

Post corrected to say muffed

Only if R provided a new force.  That’s pretty rare.

8-5-3b. I have corrected my initial post to say muffed by R, not touched by R.

This is a Safety unless you judge that R provided a new force on the ball. Muffing does not necessarily constitute a new force in and of itself.

2-13-3 : The muffing or batting of a pass, kick or fumble IN FLIGHT is not considered a new force.

Note : This muffing should not be confused with a sea worm muffin that is popular among some in coastal communities.

Being from a coastal state, you may only need to stroll to it's shoreline to find some sea worms. Finding someone to bake them into a muffin may be a bigger challenge. In these hot Summer months, a seaweed salad could provide as an ample substitute.

If you're looking for something, a little more satisfying than worms or seaweed, and your stroll leads you south to a Rhode Island shore line, you might keep an eye out for "Clam Cakes", that are usually found served (hiding) in brown paper bags (that may often be somewhat grease stained) - and unique to RI.
