2016 Season Begins
« on: August 15, 2016, 06:49:55 PM »
Here in Wisconsin, the regular season starts this week.  Although it is OK to have the first game on Thursday, 8/18, most schools will start on Friday, 8/19.  We have a 9 week regular season followed by five rounds of playoffs, in 7 divisions, 32 teams per division, based on school enrollment.  Most schools will have played 3 games BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS.  We start the season with some crews wearing shorts (I know that some feel that this is sacrilegious, but it is acceptable here) and can end the season wearing long underwear. Playoff assignments for officials are based on coaches ratings FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

Good luck to all of you this season!

Thanks same to you. Looks to be an interesting year way down south in Dixie. The HC from one of the schools we have Friday night was fired this morning.  ^no

We start on Friday as well.  Seems crazy to have 3 football games before Labor Day, but that's the only way we can conclude the playoffs before Christmas.

Kick off on Friday. I'll enjoy putting on the uniform, discussing plays, and calling football under the lights.

I won't enjoy the traffic and the car rides.

Doesn't Florida have a bye week built in (11 weeks to play 10 games)?

For us, the HS season starts the weekend after Labor Day and runs for 12 weeks, with two bye weeks.  The final games are always Thanksgiving day or the day before.  Playoffs start in the first week of December and run 13 or 14 days (first playoff games are quarterfinals)

Play starts here this week, we have 12 weeks to play 10 games, then 5 rounds of playoffs.  Championships are December 9-10 this year.

But school started on Aug 1 for many districts, so we are already in week 3 for some.  The latest anyone started school was Aug 15.

Couldn't agree more. Seems like I spend longer and longer on the commute to games then on the field sometimes.  nAnA

But there is nothing like the comradery and being back under the Friday Night Lights.

Friday night start here as well.

Alabama began using an 11-week season last year.  Teams have an option to:
     (a)  Play a "real"game on Week 0 & have a bye during the season, or
     (b)  Participate in a jamboree on Week 0 & play 10 straight weeks during the season

Last year, it was about 50/50 in our area.  This year, it's about 70/30 for a "real" game.
One school is even so confident about making the playoffs that their bye week is the
last week of the regular season.

(No jokes about how Alabamians can't count to 11   nAnA)

Yes, there is a bye week for the schools.  Also, the games on Friday are pre-season games.  So the 11 weeks to play 10 games begins on Aug 26 and ends on Nov 4.

Its my last year of forced quasi-sabbatical- my son is a senior WR on our local HS team.  I'm a crew fill-in tomorrow for a JV game then have a private school game on Sat. evening.  Youth league started here last Sat. with the usual 3 game set.  My son's team opens at home Friday night.  I did get to work their two scrimmages last week.

Similar schedule for NC, except schools can play an 11th game (an endowment game, part of the gate goes to the state) and in return they can drop a loss from their record when it comes to playoff seeding. It's not uncommon for 10-1 teams to be seeded ahead of 11-0 teams, the only tiebreakers after record are head to head (unlikely) and coin flip.

School also doesn't start for two more weeks in my neck of the woods.

In Maine, our season starts with scrimmage games on Monday, 8/22. We send 7-9 officials to each site and rotate with objective suggestions and the such. On Friday 8/26 the schools all play exhibition games. The difference between scrimmage games & exhibition games :
        (1) Scrimmages may involve more than two teams;
        (2) coaches roam the field on scrimmages & roam the sidelines on exib.
        (4) we get paid for exhibitions
The real season starts on Labor Day weekend and with state championships on the weekend before Thanksgiving. This includes 2 rounds of playoffs. Once the season ends, our activities may include:
       (1) Cheering on the Patriots for another Super Bowl;
       (2) cheering on the Allouettes for another Gray Cup;
       (3) Continue celebrating the Red Sox World Series victory;
       (4) rev up our snowmobile engines;
       (5) sharpening ice auger blades (used for drilling hole in ice for fishing);
       (6) just drinking PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon -man beer) and watching it snow.

Wisconsin actually has a law that prohibits public schools from starting before September 1st.  This law was passed at the behest* of the tourist/hospitality industries who were tired of seeing a large portion of their work force leave in mid August with two or three weeks of the tourist season to go.  There have been attempts to tweak the law, but the attempts have gone nowhere.

*  behest - I am not a language arts professor, but I believe that behest may be from the Latin "behestus" which means large campaign contributions

NC has a similar law passed for similar reasons but its a little earlier into August, (25th?).  School systems hate it.   We once started August 5th which got the parents all up in arms.

Counties can get waivers based on prior years missed days due to weather.

We are now 2/3 of the way thru the regular season schedule, with 3 games to go.  Some teams have already qualified for the playoffs.

Time flies etc., etc., etc.

Oh well, at least we haven't had any snow yet and are still wearing short sleeve shirts.
