How much do they pay you....
« on: August 28, 2017, 08:39:11 PM »
......to put up with some of this stuff? Has anyone here heard of, or been part of, a crew that made a team forfeit for whatever reason or simply left the field and went home during the game, at half time, pre-game, etc.

Sorry...I meant to post this on the war stories thread. I was not really asking about the actual pay.

Had a semipro game this summer.  Winning team is up 48-0 after a td with just over a minute to go.  They decide to onside kick.  Not surprisingly the losing team takes exception to this and we get a fight on the field.  We got the numbers of those involved, ejected them, and declared the game over and left.

There's not enough money on God's green earth to work a semi-pro game. Did it once. That's all it took.

My wife loves officiating. Every Penney on the check covers her Christmas. She's had some really good ones. I get paid for her.

Florida Semi Pro, NFL Orientation "Thou shalt not penalize a coach or player for swearing at you."

Game three, Visiting player (defender) looks back at traffic on the 5 going in, stops on a dime and backs into an on coming (offensive) player. Spends the next 30 seconds using every four letter word he knows at me. My reply? "You need better acting lessons, that was really bad."

VP of the league was behind me and heard the swearing. "This has to change, we are trying to draw families, that will not work." League letter banning swearing was delivered to all teams that week. Semi Pro, just bigger babies. Especially Cops and Fire Fighters.

Along those same lines...a story I got from the other night at a Rec. league game.

Ref: (hears swearing that would make a sailor blush directed toward the him coming from the sideline)  *Throws a flag and goes to the Head Coach*  "Coach, you need to get your assistants under control"

Coach:  That wasn't any of us, we are over there (points to opposite direction from where the cussing came from).  It is him (points at one guy on the sideline)

Ref: Tell Father so and so that he is being thrown out of the game.

Yep, it was the priest of the school

Working a playoff District game in baseball. Swearing in the stands, identified the culprit, Sheriff's Deputies came to remove the drunk causing problems. Middle of an inning, Deputy asks me to the fence. "He's the Church Pastor, I don't have the heart to make him leave. Can he sit in his car behind right field?" "You're telling me you are going to let a drunk drive his car to the field behind right? Are you guys nuts?" " Ray, he's the pastor of my church. we will drive his car there" "You guys drink red wine at communion? No lights, no horn, no swearing, he stays in the car. One mistake and I crash his next sermon."

Quiet as a church mouse.

One of the local pastors used to assistant coach for the high school soccer and basketball teams. Seemed like he got a caution or technical foul every other game I saw him (usually from my partner but occasionally from me). Didn't know him well enough to talk to him about how it's inappropriate for a pastor to get penalized for unsporting behavior.

Last week, our LJ (I'm HL) said there was this older gentleman on the sideline who was riding him. Seemed like a booster or friend of the program or something, not a coach. We talked about it at halftime and got the AD to tell the old guy that he either stopped immediately or he had to leave. The game proceeded without further incident.

Right as the clock ran out, the home team head coach went to my LJ to shake his hand, and said "Thanks for not throwing my dad out".

I had a similar thing happen once -- older gentleman just loses his mind that the running back can't block low when in pass protection (because this isn't the NFL), I ask the coach if he can be restrained for purposes of decorum and sportsmanship. One of the players comes over shortly thereafter and says "I'm sorry about my grandpa"

I had a game a couple of years ago where I kept hearing a fairly high pitched voice behind me on the sideline yelling.  I heard things like, "That was the worst call I've ever seen!!" and "You gotta call that!!".  I usually just ignore stuff like that, but the voice had me curious.  I turned around and it was about a 12 year old boy...the head coach's son.  I just turned to him, put my finger over my lips, and said, "Shhh!  I better not hear another word outta you!"  The look on his face was utter shock (like he'd never been told to be quiet before), but I didn't hear another word out of him the rest of the game.

Couple weeks ago my LJ stops the game, calls the R over and they both talk to the AD. I see a photographer being escorted out of the stadium by the AD. All the players are watching. The left guard is looking rather sheepish and says, "Who's dad is that?"  :embarassed: All the other players on offense start cracking up. Apparently the left guard's dad is the team photographer.

This occurred several years ago, but it worked :

(1)There was an injury on the field and teams back then were just standing around.

(2) One was from a mill town, whose favorite word began with F ,and it wasn't football, as they were talking to their teammates.

(3) I knew the captain as their baseball catcher, and called him over.

(4) I pointed toward Tom, our umpire  sNiCkErS , and said : "Captain, you see that guy over there (pointing to Tom  sNiCkErS who was standing over the ball while scratching  sNiCkErS his belly), he's Rev. Tom a Baptist minister. He gets  really nervous when he hears that F word and he carries four flags, one in each pocket. I've seen him get so nervous, that he would throw all four flags at once. Could you ask your players to clean up their language?"

(5) The captain goes back to his teammates, where they all start looking at Tom (still scratching his belly).

(6) A few moments later the period ends and as we were changing ends, I noticed several of his teammates
hovering around and shaking hands with  :o "Rev" Tom  sNiCkErS.

(7) I asked Tom what that was all about  ;). He replied: " I don't ??? know, they were apologizing and calling me Father, Reverend and the like :o ??? "

(8) The game continued with the only F that I heard was "football".

EPILOGUE :

Most kids are good kids and reminder that this is a school function and usually on school property. Talk on the field like you would in the classroom.

"Rev" Tom was really a high school teacher and basketball coach :). He is also a good sport and I explained ,on the way home, what the players were sorry for when they greeted him in between periods.

This got me so charged up that I wrote , under Points of Emphasis, PROFANITY AND SPORTSMANSHIP for the 2001 NFHS Rules Book.

.....Some football stories have happy endings tiphat:
