Utchad i tells my guys that it's better to have a late flag then one that is early make sure you see the whole play. Rewind it in your replay booth (your brain) and then make your decision..  it works well for my crew and we get very few complaints. My goal as a crew chief get in work the game like it's the most  important game of your career no matter if it a game between 2 teams that are 0-8 or if it the state championship game because for the teams the fans the towns it's is the most important game for them. I consider it a  successful night if we get in and out and nobody knows our name.

I find our state loose more officials not do to officials getting onto them buts it's the coaches that  constantly bark at them riding them about missing calls or calls that officials get right but the coach is telling him he wrong. Then the fans see the coaches acting a fool then they think they have the right to act as a fool as well. I tend to let the young ones learn to fly on their own when it comes to handling a coach but when the coach gets enough rope to hang him self that is when I or another veteran official step in and puts a stop to the  abuse

I case in  particular  several  years back in a 9th grade game. I had a new official working the wing as hl  I was working Umpire that night and for the most part he was working a good ball game he missed a few bur hey don't we all. I could hear this head coach riding the official the whole first half.  Well at halftime we were talking about the half and he asked me this Question. How do you know when enough is enough.  I looked at him square in the eye and said take as much as you would from a subject that you have pulled over on a traffic stop ( this new official is a State  trooper ) he then smiled at me and said really?  I told him each official has their point that they react at. And I am guessing for you would be if you don't stand for it on a traffic stop then you should not stand for it on the football field. He smiled big grin and said I now know how to handle it,  I then said you are not allowed to Taze ,pepper spray or physically take him to the ground. We had a big laugh out of that,

About 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter the coaches team was on offense and a pass play occurred down his sideline. The coach wanted DPI. Now I admit I turned and watched the play do to him being new the referee took up my slack. Qb was never threatened and the HL made a good No call Well this coach went ballistic and ran down the field and got into the HL face. Hl had a flag on the ground. As I get to the coach and HL I head the coach yell to HL the magic word you are a Mother well in my book anything after you gets personal so I dropped my flag. After seeing that flag that coach went into what seemed like a 5 minute cussing fit that would make a sailor blush. I am pretty sure I learned some new words and some of the thing he wanted us to do defied the laws of physics.
I know that he pushed a couple of his assistant coaches finally after 6 flags for USC and his AD and the SRO finally got him in control. And escorted him off the field and off Campus. During his fit he pick up one of the flag and sailed it right by my ear I was thinking the nerve of him. The I remembered I had a cop on my crew and I located him in a full sprint toward the coach. I was able to yell for him to stop that everything would be all right.
When the  fiasco  was over we got together as officials the home head coach the AD and the OC for the visiting team.
And had a  discussion on what we were going to do. The visiting AD said I truly understand if we have to forfeit.  And that was what we talked about doing but I told him we could not do that to his kids as it was not their fault and we did not want to punish their kids so we decided to play on, after marking the penalty off we resumed.

Coach was fired basically on the spot
It was the wildest thing that i have ever been apart of.

After the game I asked the HL what was going thru his mind during that he said I was amazed how y'all handled the  situation but when he thru the flag at you I went into cop mode and was going to protect my partiners. He said I am thankful cooler head prevailed because I was taking him down.

We still talk and laugh about it today

Big Don,

I wanted to say, "Cool story."  But, it really wasn't "cool."  However, it is a great story to hear, and learn.  Good job by all of you on the crew.  Well, handled, with priorities in the right places.

Thanks Robert.  The worst part of the story was enforcing the fouls half of half of half and so on. I think when it was all said and done it was 4th and a country mile. Punt never made it close to the original LOS 😎 the snap for he punt took place at the 1/2 yard line

A little harsh, but I'll continue the conversation respectfully and in good faith. Let's assume I do peek back and the passer is looking somewhere else, so I keep the flag in my pocket and I turn back to my receiver. How do you know the passer isn't turning to that receiver now too-- a receiver who is now three steps behind where he would have been but for the hold?

If your example had been DPI on the opposite side of the field, I'd be with you. I feel that defensive holding on a pass read will be relevant to the play in at least 90 percent of situations--depending on the passer's ability to go through his progressions quickly.

I'm a 4th year official, and I readily agree that I have a great deal to learn. If I'm wrong on this, I would like to know that.
  You're not wrong.

Our RSO occasionally reminds us thus:

"I get way more calls about the flags you DO throw than the ones that you don't."  FWIW

I may get blasted for this. But I tell my crew every pregame. No IWs tonight see the ball see the ball see the ball the read the writing on the ball.  That has worked for me for the last 3 year.

The VP of training my rookie year would say this every week in the classroom. And he says it during the pregame of every game he works, whether he's the white hat or not.  I've never had an IW working with him:

See THE ball in THE possession of THE runner on THE ground before you blow THE whistle.
