Looking for clarification on this. When can lineman interlock feet. My son is doing a research paper on rule differences between HS, college, and NFL. We can't find anything in the rule book that addresses this? I have seen conflicting info on different message boards. Some say all can do it, some say only guards and center, and some none at all. If anyone could point us in the right direction we would appreciate it. Thanks.

7-2-2
ART. 2 ... The players on each side of and next to the snapper may lock legs with the snapper, but any other A lineman must have each foot outside the closest foot of the player next to him at the snap. A’s players may stand, crouch or kneel.

7-2-2 above is a quote from the NFHS Rule code.

Thank you. Not sure how we missed it.

No problem. If you search interlock you won’t find it. That may have been the problem. Hope it helps

The Fed's search function is atrocious. If I recall correctly "horsecollar tackle" has to be entered as "horse-collar tackle" to be located.

I agree. You have to get creative to find anything

After the snap the entire line may "interlock" their feet (stand with their foot behind their teammate).

If any lineman other than the guards and center have their feet inside of their teammate's, it is an illegal formation, 5 yard penalty, usually enforced from the previous spot. If, after the snap, the lineman grab the legs, arms, etc. of a teammate, it is interlocked blocking, a 10 yard penalty.

7.2.2 SITUATI0N: Following the snap on a kick try, the offensive linemen "step down" and interlock feet. RULING: Legal. However, prior to the snap only the linemen next to the snapper are permitted to lock legs with the snapper.

I’ve been watching the state championship games in Alabama the last couple of days and in practically every game at least one team in their field goal formation violated this rule. Does Alabama play under NFHS rules? Or is this one of these rules no one wants to call. I see it happen all over the country. If nobody wants to call it let's just get rid of the rule!
