Unusual punt play
« on: September 07, 2019, 04:30:36 PM »
K ball 4/5 from the K-30 yard line.  During the kick, there are live ball personal fouls on K58 and R40 at the K-25 yard line (behind the line of scrimmage).  During the return of the punt, there is a live ball facemask by K15 on the runner R40.  After the play is over, there is a dead ball personal foul late hit by R60.  How do we administer?

Because R’s penalty was not PSK, all live ball fouls offset. We go back to previous spot to replay the down, and enforce R’s dead ball foul. 1st down for K/A.

What if the personal fouls by K58 and R40 were at the K-35 yard line (beyond the LOS) during the kick?

In that case R could decline k live ball fouls and have their live ball enforced by psk- end of kick. Then we mark off r dead ball. OR, r could accept one of ks fouls, k accepts r foul creating double foul. We go back to previous spot, enforce dead ball foul.

So at the end of the day,  R can keep the ball with 30 yards of penalty yardage from the end of the kick? (assuming the facemask was a 15 yarder)

In the original post, the face mask was by K so it wouldn’t come into play.

Just curious - why is the foul during the kick by the receiving team not PSK?

Because it happened behind the NZ. PSK fouls have to be beyond the expanded NZ.

Thanks.  Different from other rule sets.

Thanks.  Different from other rule sets.

I usually just go by the philosophy of "If it's part of the punt coverage, it's PSK.  If it's part of the punt rush, it's previous spot."  This play sounds like neither, as they're scuffling, so I'd put it where it is by rule.
