Not too hard, I don't think.
---------------—---------------
1. 4/10 @ A-25. Team A lines up in a scrimmage kick formation with punter A98 14-yards deep to receive the snap. At the snap there is heavy pressure on A98 and he fakes a kick and takes off running staying within the tackle box. As defenders approach A98, he kicks the ball at the A-27 and is contacted just after the kick. The kick rolls out of bounds at the B-35.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-35, snap (25). B, 1/10, A-20, snap (25). (Corrected)
Even though within the tackle box, it It was not obvious that A98 was going to make a scrimmage kick; thus, there is no foul for roughing/running into the kicker. But A98 commits a foul for an illegal kick (beyond the NZ). The ball is dead when kicked, and the 5-yard penalty is enforced at the previous spot, and includes loss of down. So, Team B will be awarded a scrimmage series at the A-20. (Corrected)
2. Free Kick @ A-35. A98’s kick was muffed by B21 at the B-10 and the ball rolls forward. A44 dives for the ball, contacts it at the B-15 and then the ball rolls out of bounds at the B-19. A80 was offside on the play.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-24, snap (25).
The 5-yard penalty for A80’s offside foul may be penalized at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to Team B, which, in this case, is the B-19, taking the ball to the B-24, where Team B will be awarded a scrimmage series.
3. Free Kick @ A-35. The free kick in flight strikes B21 who is 2 yards deep in his end zone. After B21’s touch, the ball hits the ground in the end zone and then goes out of bounds at the 3-yard line.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-3, snap (40 and running).
Due to B21’s touching of the legally kicked ball before it struck the ground in the end zone, the ball remained alive and in play, and the ball belongs to Team B at the dead-ball spot (B-3).
4. Free Kick @ A-35. A98’s squib kick untouched by Team B goes out of bounds at the B-32. A80 was offside on the play.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-37, snap (25), OR A, kickoff, A-30, free kick timing (25).
The 5-yard penalty for A80’s offside foul may be penalized at the spot where the legally kicked ball went OB, which, in this case, is the B-32, taking the ball to the B-37, where Team B will be awarded a scrimmage series. Alternatively, Team B may have the penalty enforced at the previous spot, with the kickoff repeated.
5. 1/10 @ A-15. A12 throws a backward pass from the A-10, and while the ball is in flight, it is batted by B79 at the A-8, and the ball goes out of bounds behind Team A’s goal line.
RULING:
A, free kick, A-20, free kick timing (25).
Batting a loose ball (including a backward pass) in flight does not change the impetus on the ball. In this case, the impetus remains with the backward pass; thus, when it went out of bounds behind A’s goal line, the result of the down is a safety – 2 points for Team B, with a free kick by A to follow, from the A-20.
6. Free Kick @ A-35. A98’s free kick is muffed in flight by B21 in his end zone. While the ball is loose in the end zone, B80 bats the ball out the back of the end zone.
RULING:
B, free kick, B-20, free kick timing (25). A, kickoff, A-45, free kick timing (25), OR B, 1/10, B-25, snap (25).
B80 commits a foul for illegal batting (batting of a loose ball that has touched the ground, in any direction in the end zone). The penalty results in a safety – 2 points for Team A, with a free kick by B to follow, from the B-20. The enforcement spot for accepted penalties for fouls that occur during the kick play portion of a free kick down is the previous spot. The 10-yard penalty for the illegal batting will take the ball to the A-45, where Team A will repeat the kickoff. Alternatively, Team A could decline the penalty and allow Team B to put the ball in play at the B-25.
7. Free Kick @ A-35. A21 catches the kick at the B-5 and returns it back to the A-30. During the return, the head coach of the kicking team comes onto the field of play, vigorously and angrily protesting that there should have been a flag for holding by the receiving team back at the B-15.
RULING:
B, 1/10, A-15, snap (25).
By rule, the 15-yard penalty for the UNS foul committed by the Team A head coach is enforced as a dead-ball at the succeeding spot, which, in this case, is the A-30, taking the ball to the A-15, where Team B is awarded a scrimmage series.
8. 1/10 @ A-25. With 0:01 remaining in the game and Team A trailing by 5 points, A12 throws a pass that is complete to A88 at midfield. After the catch by A88, there is a series of legal backwards passes keeping the ball alive in Team A possession. Eventually A21 throws a backward pass toward teammate A44, and the ball hits the ground at the A-45 with no immediate recovery. The Team B bench thinking that the ball is dead rushes the field and many squad members are on the field. A44 recovers the ball at the A-43 and begins running and encounters heavy traffic with the Team B squad members on the field, reverses field and is finally tackled by B50 at the B-30.
RULING:
A, 1/10, B-15, 0:00 (4), no clock (25).
All Team B players are charged with UNS fouls for an Unfair Act, and the single 15-yard penalty is enforced at the succeeding spot, and Team A will put the ball in play for a scrimmage down in the extended 4th period (no game clock).
If, in the opinion of the game officials, A44 would have advanced beyond B’s goal line without the interference from the sideline personnel on the field, the Referee could award a touchdown. However, that action should be used very carefully, and only with 100% certainty the BC would have scored without the interference.
