Title: First time back on the field
Post by: RickKY on March 19, 2010, 08:53:28 PM
Many of you know I sat out 2009 because I had knee replacement surgery, and then had an infection that complicated my recovery.  This afternoon I worked a scrimmage.  It was my first time on the field since December '08.  I worked the white hat position because none of the other officials with me had ever been white hat, and none was interested.  I had hoped to work my normal position, umpire, in order to get acclimated to having bodies all around me again.  But I had a good time today and the knee feels great.  My legs are sore from lack of that much activity in a year though.  But that will eventually come back to me.  The only problem I had was recognizing the switching of left and right handed QB's, then lining up on the wrong side a couple of times.  It was great to be on the field again, and I'm now motivated to work hard to get into shape for the new season.  It's only a few months away now. ^good

Ricky,
Welcome back to the field.  I have followed your progress during your surgery and rehab and have included you in my prayers.  I can not wait for the season to start in August.  Take it easy getting in shape and the season will be here before you know it!  Welcome back and the best of luck from here on out!

Rick ... if you get the opportunity can you shoot me an email.  I "retired" this year at age 51 because of my knee.  After a few years of injections (Orthovisc) which did nothing I could no longer run.  Most days the knee feels swollen and the pain is always there - not excruciating, but it's always there.  Some days even walking is a challenge.

Of course my one hobby is officiating and I would really enjoy trying to get back, but not certain how the knee would react after replacement surgery.  I would like to coorespond and understand how the season is going for you and your experience with football after the knee replacement.

If you get the chance - fwirth@wowway.com
