Title: Who rates in your state ??? ....a test
Post by: Ralph Damren on January 23, 2014, 11:16:31 AM
I'll be off on the "red-eye" tommorrow morn for windy Indy to argue what's hot and what's not for new rules. Thanks, guys for some strong ammo to lobby for ourfavorites. I also poll Maine's other 3 chapter interps, an NCAA white hat, our state football sec. and a former coach/now official for their opinions and their opinions nearly mirror yours. While we all are waiting with baited breath for new rules to argue about, here's the test :  In 2000, Sports Illustrated published a "50 from 50" list --the 50 greatest sports figures of the 20th century from each of the 50 states. Test your memory and post your opinion of whom should be # 1 from your state and let's see how many of you agree with SI's choice. ??? ??? (Note : if you are from Alaska or Kentucky, some of SI's choices were of a 4-legged variety). Have fun.......

Assuming it's meant athlete born in the state....

For California I'd bet SI went with Tiger Woods, although I personally am not certain a golfer qualifies.

My personal choice would be Ted Williams with Tom Brady as a close second.

If Kentucky's is not Secretariat then I quit.

Sorry, Younggun, # 1 was Trajan  Langdon -"put state on national hoops map". I misslead you, with the hint - several mushers (drivers) not the dogs were on the list. Sorry.

Sorry, Mike L, Tiger was 13th. Teddy Baseball was 5 and (remember this was for last century) Brady had yet to do anything cool. Hint : #1 had 2 baseball brothers. Kentucky's first non-human listing was Man o'War at # 17 - I don't think the movie had came out before the list was made!

Not sure what "from your state" actually means, so I'll give two answers:

(1)  Paul W. Bryant (born in Arkansas, but gained his fame at Alabama)

(2)  Have several in mind for those born in Alabama:
       (a)  Henry Aaron
       (b)  Jesse Owens
       (c)  Vincent (Bo) Jackson

Safe travels!

DiMaggio? Really? I do give him props for Marilyn, but better than Ted? Hmmmmm

Before, during or after the movie, if Secretariat isn't number one in the state of Kentucky much less the country, then the guys at SI are smoking the wrong kind of tobaccy

Excellent job, 'Bama' . Bear is # 1 in Arkansas with the caption : "Four states could claim him".Aaron was # 1 with Bo Jackson # 3. Jesse Owens was # 1 in another state. Hint: round on both ends and hi in the middle.

Since most Arkansans would not claim Bear Bryant, I would have to say Frank Broyles, John Daly and Brooks Robinson, and Dizzy Dean  have to be somewhere in the top five to ten for Arkansas.

I'm with you, Mike, on Teddy Baseball. After Joltin' Joe was said "..56 games..3 times MVP..". After Ted was said :"Best hitter  (and fisherman) ever".Remember, Ted was not a big hit with sportswriters (he spat at them too often) and the list was assembled by....sportswriters. :(

You nailed it, Prab, with Ernie Nevers (who only scored 40 points in a NFL game) # 2. Eric's sister, Beth, was # 49 and I beleive the only brother / sister combo on any state's list. Good job.

There are some Tennessee locations today that still engage in knife throwing and human target practice on a daily basis according to most late night newscasts.

Davey was indeed a very accomplished athlete.  However, he is technically ineligible to be considered as the greatest 20th centuryathlete from Tennessee.

I recall reading once that she went into labor with her first child while airborne. The pilot was making arrangements for an emergency landing in Covinton, Kentucky, when Pat intervened with : "My first born WILL NOT be born on Kentucky soil!" The pilot withdrew his request, and Pat's first child was a true Tennesseeian!

2005, I'm keeping the clock for the Women's Final Four.  One of the guys in my office is Pat's neighbor in Knoxville.  He tells me to be sure to say hello for him.

On Saturday, I meet her at the shoot around, mention my friend's name, we have a nice talk.  On Sunday, she wins her semi-final game, and in the tunnel afterward, we get into a discussion about her son.  She is worried because her son will miss school on Monday and Tuesday.  I say, "Come on, how often does mom get to play for the National Championship?  Oh, excuse me, actually, it's pretty often!"  We both chuckle and go on.

At the Championship on Tuesday, she comes out on the court, shakes hands with Gene Auirema of UConn, and then comes over to the table and shakes hands with me.  Reporters and others at the table ask why she stopped to see me, are Pat and I friends?  Told them, no, she is just a class act.

On a non-sports  (well, maybe not if you're a hunter) matter, the TSA announced that they confiscated 1,813 guns in 2013 at airport security checkpoints. #2 (Dallas- 96) and #3 (Houston -68) are from non-NFHS states, but the leader ,with 111, is the home airport of a very active and beloved member of our forum. Who can name the airport???? ??? Editor's note : This is a payback from many years ago, when said member posted on a now-defunct website an article of Maine coeds forming a topless parade. nAnA :)

Of course Hartsfield-Jackson airport (ATL) leads the list:

1.  It's the busiest passenger airport in the world.  More people means more knuckleheads.
2.  TSA agents that must be paid on commission.  Our agents are downright militia-like compared to many other airports.
3.  A state with more than average number of gun owners, although our percentage (40.3%) is virtually identical to Maine (40.5%).

Doesn't surprise me in the least.  What is bad/shocking is that TSA found over 100 GRENADES in airport screenings.

I know it's the busiest but does it have the most originations (where TSA would be involved)?  I think it's business is due to be a hub/layover location.  I've flow through Atlanta a lot more than I've flown to Atlanta.

ATL is number one since 1998 because it is such a large hub.  95 million passengers a year.  It was once said that when you die, it doesn't matter if you are going to heaven or hell, you'll have to change planes in Atlanta.  But even some connecting passengers have to be rescreened by TSA.  It used to be all international passengers, even if you weren't connecting!  It also would be anyone returning to the main terminal.  With the new international terminal, you only have to be rescreened if you are connecting to a domestic flight.  So TSA is involved with some of the connecting passengers as well.

LAX is number one in origination and destinations (O&D).

The Wizard of Westwood...John Wooden!  He grew up and got his coaching start in Indiana.  He graduated from Purdue and coached at Indiana State before taking the job at UCLA.

I just read an entry on him on Wikipedia and found an interesting "what if".  He was also being pursued by Minnesota at the time.  He preferred to stay in the Midwest but a nasty cold spell prevented the UofM from calling him with his offer in a timely manner.  They didn't call until after he accepted the UCLA offer.  And now you know the rest of the story.

Have to admit that WV is probably one of the easiest states to pick #1.  Not really sure who was #2.  Would guess one of the Sams, Huff or Snead (and not sure he counts).  Of course it could be a college coach.  In the 21st century 4 of the last 5 national champs have been coached by WV natives.  And surprisingly WV natives coached 11 national football champs in the 20th century.  Anybody have any idea who the coaches are and how many each won?

REPLY: A few I didn't dare say: Joe Theismann (author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Football" [fitting I think]) and Tony Siragusa (possessor of the largest head I've ever seen on a football field).

Well, Bobby Bowden is one, dadgummit.

Bobby wasn't born in WV. The 15 national champions in the 20th & 21st century were coached by native born West Virginians.  Unfortunately none have ever occurred at WVU.

Would assume #2 would have to be Byron "Whizzer" White.  Played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but just a tad before my time.

Sam Huff was #6; a girl was # 2; # 3 is the single season RBI record holder; no sign of Sam Snead.

PA would be tough... just off the top of my head (skewed toward football)

Ditka
Dorsett
Namath
Montana
Jim Kelly
Marino
Curtis Martin
Darrelle Revis

...and that's just western PA

I'd say Arnold Palmer, but I don't think of golfers as "athletes"
Ditka #38, Dorsett # 13, Namath # 11, Montana # 5, Kelly # 45, Marino # 8,  Martin & Revis not listed , and Arnold Parmer # 2.

Didn't Wilt Chamberlain have a PA connection?
:thumbup tiphat: Wilt did and was # 1.

Theismann is # 26, Siragusta isn't listed which puts him behind # 50 - Claudio Reyna - a national soccer team midfielder!

Coaches on WV's list : # 12 Clair Bee, # 14 Cam Henderson, # 16 John McKay, #32 Rocco Gorman , # 37 Russ Parsons , not household names!

Surprised the other 2 national championship coaches didn't make WV's list. One of them might have been too early in the century for the sports writers to remember but I'd think 6 national championships in football would qualify. John McKay did provide 4 of those championships.

Can't believe I forgot Mary Lou. Still trying to figure out #3. Wikipedia says the record holder is Hack Wilson and lists his birth state as Pa. Did John Kruk make list?

Mary Lou is why I used the term girl in lieu of female or woman - 16 when she won Olympic gold! John Kruk was #22. Hack Wilson was #3, either SI or Wikipedia goofed. I'm betting SI did.

Girl. Woman. In either case, she was still female.  pi1eOn

Girl was used a a hint on age and to separate her from any 50 year old female trucker who may have driven the WV hills blindfolded as a dare back when hula-hoops were vogue. I'll try to be more politically correct next ! hEaDbAnG nAnA :) FlAg1 deadhorse: ^flag 8]

In Mass we have a few: Rocky Marciano, Patrick Ewing, Tom Glavine, Bobby Carpenter. But I'd have to rocky is tops.

Good job, Eprov, Rocky was #1, Ewing #2  ,Carpenter #4, and Glavine #7. Hint on #2 : last player to score via a drop-kick in NFL.

Then it must be Flutie.  Flutie above Glavine?  Ridiculous.

Flutie was a good college QB with a marginal pro career.  Glavine was a first ballot HOF pitcher.  Not even close!

I have a photo pf him making the drop-kick hanging in my office. But I didn't put him on the list. Maybe the top BC grad.
