Title: Horse Collar or Not?
Post by: SWilliams on September 04, 2010, 04:59:59 PM
Two back set.  A11 fakes hand off inside to A33 who tucks and runs without the ball outside left tackle and down the sideline 10 yards or so.  A33 is chased down by B89 and tackled from the side inside the shoulder pad opening.  Meanwhile, A34 the real ball carrier who got the hand off and went off the right tackle and up the sideline continues running for a 30 yard gain.

Flag was thrown in the vicinity of A33.  Coach goes balistic.

Right call?

Correct call (assuming the call was for a Horse-Collar Tackle). HCT specifies that it has to be initiated on the runner.

Quote
9-4-3k: (No player or nonplayer shall:) Grab the inside back or side collar of the shoulder pads or jersey of the runner and subsequently pull that opponent to the ground. (Horse-collar)

Here's why it's correct...

Quote
2-32-13: A runner is a player who is in possession of a live ball or is simulating possession of a live ball.
