Looking for feedback (negative or positive) on the annually published Football Rules Simplified & Illustrated publication. I know it's only about $9 but if folks are finding these not necessarily helpful, that's $9 that can be applied to other possible useful items...such as a couple of whistles.
If you have purchased previous editions, please share if you thought they were worth it. Our region director for the State association provides rule books, case books, and umpire manuals so we get a good collection of information at the start of our preseason prep time.
Thanks!

For the more "visually-needy" of our colleagues, the funny book can help with the trickier concepts; so I believe it certainly has a place in the literature....

It used to come with our packet from the state when I first started. As a new official, it was somewhat helpful but I haven't missed it since they quit providing it. A Reddings NFHS guide is a much wiser use of money.

Agreed completely.

I also like the Rules by Topic. Last I saw Illustrated, it was not comprehensive.

Rules by Topic is basically the rule book/case book combined into a different format. While it has its place, I agree the Redding manual is a wiser investment for the masses.

Is the new 2012 Redding Book out yet?

Thanks- I sent Scott a note about them earlier today and I have yet to get his reply. I checked Honig's and they show an arrival of 8/2012. I would like my hands on it before that!

In NE Ohio we just started our new officiating class and each person got a copy of the illustrated boolet. We find brand new officials need all of the help they can get in trying to learn the football rule book. When I did pop Warner football, I always carried that booklet to try to explain to the parent coaches the rules we are trying to enforce.
