Unsure about the longest, but I recall vividly the "scariest" .
SCENE : State championship game - early 1980's
I was the back judge on a 5 man crew, a sunny November day, Stearns led Winthrop by 2 with 0:05 to go.
(1) Winthrop was preparing to try a 37 yard field goal;
(2) field goals in Maine were rare back then (musta' been the gravitional pull
);
(3) the LJ & I headed to our positions under the pipes;
(4) I asked : "Have you ever done this before?"
(5) He said : "NOPE, hope kick goes your way
."
(6)The sun was in ours eyes, we were both
;
(7)my silent prayer: "Please send the kick his way
."
(8)The kick barely made it to the endzone
.
(9) The Stearns players,coaches & fans celebrated
.
(10) I wiped sweat from my brow
- it was a cold day.
Morale of story : If you should be called upon to call a kick, it doesn't hurt to go under the pipes in pre-game as the kickers practice. IMHO, it give you the same feeling of confidence a plate ump gets from watching warm up pitches prior to the start of a game.
