Title: Electronic Whistle - Worth it to invest in one for basketball officiating?
Post by: Official_21 on September 25, 2021, 06:20:21 AM
Does anyone use an electronic whistle to officiate basketball and can offer pros and cons so I can make an informed decision as to if I should buy one or just keep using my regular fox 40 whistle (Of which I have three, one with a CMG).

Some of referees I work with in football (I run the clock at HS football games) use an electronic whistle and the one thing I find is, I can't always hear it when blown. The fact that football is played outdoors may have something to do with it vs using it in an enclosed space, such as a HS gym for basketball.

Several of our football officials bought the EWs when they first came out, but had the same problem you described and went back to the Fox40.  I would think a similar problem might crop up in a noisy gym, but I can’t speak from personal experience.

Logical assumption though. Didn't think about the noisy gym situation yEs:

I tried an electronic whistle at a basketball officiating camp. No one could hear it, so I went with a whistle mask instead. I've used the whistle mask since for most of the pandemic.
