Capt'n Crunch - Trick play
« on: October 06, 2017, 12:30:43 PM »
Coach: "I've been doing this 30 years!  I know the rules!"
Ref: "Are you married coach?"
Coach (suddenly offguard): "umm...yeah, why?"
Ref: "I've been married 30 years and my wife says there is still room for improvement"
Coach: "<silence>"

Cue the *attempting to deceive* argument.
And the- “coach, do you have any trick plays?” Discussion.

The initial formation looks to have 7 on the line, so when the cartwheeler goes in motion, that only leaves 6.  ^flag

If the initial formation has 8 on the line, the cartwheeler can go in motion, but has to be at least 5 yards behind the LoS when the ball is snapped. He wasn't.  ^flag

The cartwheel itself is an act that fits the definition of UNS as it draws attention to the kid.  ^flag

I would hit the illegal motion penalty here as it is the most obvious, and then warn Mr. Cartwheeler that such actions can be deemed unsportsmanlike. I would attribute the cartwheel to an attempt to deceive an opponent rather than trying to attract attention to himself,  although there is very much a case for an USC here.

Since Mr. Cartwheel started the play from the LOS from an interior lineman position and never established himself as a back (by stopping and setting for a second), isn't he also guilty of being an ineligible receiver downfield?

This is wrong on so many levels it’s hard to pick just one.
About the only thing you can’t call here is a snap infraction. 😂

If you do not call at least illegal formation here, you are a goofball. Witness at the link four goofballs, who have collectively made things harder for those of us who call things correctly.

If you're in a viral clip and don't drop a flag, odds are you've done it wrong.

When that video of the kid in Georgia doing the worm surfaced a few weeks ago the GHSA came out and said to flag such things as unsportsmanlike conduct for making a travesty of the game. So that'd have to be my ruling.
