Anybody heard from Maven?  He seems to have disappeared.  Miss his insights - even if I didn't always agree with him ^talk

While we search for Maven, here's a non-football trivia tester for you guys......

The Founding Fathers felt that Election Day should be after the harvest (after October) and declared
the Tuesday that follows the first Monday in November as it ???. This nears the complexity of our numbering exception rule...why couldn't say : "The first day of November." or "The first Tuesday of November." There are two reasons why....who knows 'em.......

1) No guarantee that the first day of November is a Tuesday
2) The first Tuesday in November might be November 1st

So they wanted it on Tuesday other than 1 Nov?

Very good, Suudy, you are on the right track, but why wouldn't they want it on Nov 1 and why on  Tuesday?

Nov 1 is a "holy day", a day of obligation for Catholics.  Don't want to interfere with going to church!

Very good guys, Both reasons were religious ones. Back in that era, voters often travelled via horseback and the polls were ,at best, the county seat or ,at worst, the state capitol : Sunday was obviously out and Monday should be ,too, so the weary traveler could use it as a travel day. Nov 1 is All Saints Day, and once every 7 years would be on the first Tuesday.

There is a reason for our election laws.

There is a reason for our scrimmage kick formation.

Life is good :) :) :) :) :) tiphat:

There were other considerations as well:

Harvest would be over, but winter storms not yet arrived
Many merchants did their company books on the 1st of the month
Wanted a maximum of 34 days from election day to the meeting of the electoral college on the first Wednesday in December (a legal requirement at the time)
