Scrimmage kick question
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:50:33 AM »
Here's a situation, help me figure out if we "booted" this call...

K punts the ball.  While the kick is in flight, R1 blocks K1 into R2, who is in position to receive the kick.  R2 then muffs the ball because of the contact with K1.  K2 recovers the muffed kick.

In rule 6-2-4 it specifically notes that touching by R is ignored "if it is caused by K pushing or blocking R into contact with the ball" (which didn't happen -- R blocked K into R!).

Rule 6-5-6 notes that while "any scrimmage kick is in flight...K shall not: a) Touch the ball or R, unless blocked into the ball or R.  (In our case, they were blocked into R, so no interference by rule).

In short, I think that because R blocked K into their own teammate, the muff by R2 is not ignored, making the ball live for K to recover legally.

Input?

I agree.

Unlike NCAA, Fed doesn't hold HS players responsible for fully controlling their bodies after being blocked or pushed.

Agree.  K keeps the ball
