Diving on a player laying on the ground
« on: October 15, 2018, 11:19:35 PM »
UW vs UO on ABC.

Pass rusher breaks through a double team enough to force the QB to scramble but the blockers knock the rusher to the ground.  The QB is behind them out of sight.  One of the O-linemen dives on the prone D-Linemen and rolls over him to keep him down longer and to be a little nasty, doesn't attempt to hold him though.  QB throws a long TD pass.

I see this happen a lot and have never seen it called a penalty except if the O-Linemen goes to the neck or head or spears him with the crown of the helmet.  Or if it is after the whistle which was not the case here.

Should this have been called:
- a legal finishing of the block.
- The vaguely defined discretionary Unnecessary Roughness call.
- Some other rule infraction I have overlooked

(By the way I am debating on the side of the refs and against my teams fellow fans on how this was called.)

Have y'all looked at the latest weekly game review video from Redding?  Perhaps you should.

Quarter/Time?

Full game replay: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NRXaJ4ZqeOry9R24-Zc818uonIUoKwV_/view

2:41 of the 3rd quarter, replay that shows the dive on the D-Lineman at 1:46:55.  We are talking about the dive on the down rusher,  not the hold as he was rushing.

Thanks for your reply!

I wouldnt call anything on that play. Maybe a talk-to but I dont see anything particularly vicious about it. If it was at POA, I think you could argue for a hold but the QB is already much further downfield and this doesnt affect the play at all. I dont think you'd be supported on this being UNR unless the OL led with his helmet.

I'm sorry. I lied.  It wasn't the "latest" weekly game review video from Redding (which would have been week 6, when I made that post).  It was actually week 4, play number 2.  Almost identical to the play being discussed here, and Redding wants this called as a personal foul.

And week seven is now available.

If you are not already registered with the CFO, you'll need to register ($30 for TASO members).

Is this the same play where Rogers suggested this should have been a flagrant personal foul?

Yes, that was his comment for Video 4, play 2.
