Field Goal from Free Kick Following a Safety?
« on: June 27, 2017, 08:59:15 PM »
8-4-1a lists the situations where a field goal can be scored.  Was there ever a time where the rules permitted a field goal to be scoredon a free kick following a safety?

Was there ever? No idea. Football has been played for a long time and rules change every year.

Not in the past 30 years for sure.

Evolution of a free kick following a safety :

 1943 - A field goal can be scored by ANY free kick (FDR was president).

 1969 - A punt can be used as free kick after a safety (Nixon was president).

 1980 - No field goal from fair catch after a safety (Reagan was president).

Things to remind yourself (and possibly R/K) of on free kick after safety :

 (1) If punting, the kick must be made w/I 1 step of K's line.
 (2) All free kick rules apply including kick OOB, kicking player locations & the like.
 (3) Kick can be recovered by K if beyond R's line even if punted.

The probability of a safety free kick going through the pipes would be very low UNLESS:
 (1) The kickers had a prevailing hurricane force wind;
 (2) R had a lobster crate of dead ball fouls;
 (3) the game was played on a planet with a lower gravational pull.

Welcome to the forum, Brian, hope you find it both enjoyable and informative. You are correct, Reagan won the 1980 election but didn't become president until 1981. I enjoy presidential trivia and was recalling that Reagan had broke the "Tippicanoe Curse" that was said to have been put on William Henry Harrison back in 1840. So it goes, every president elected in a year divided by 20 would die while in office.
          1860 - Lincoln
          1880 - Garfield
          1900 - McKinley
          1920 - Harding
          1940 - FDR
          1960 - JFK
Thanks for the correction --my bad :)

The OP asked "Was there ever a time where the rules permitted a field goal to be scored on a free kick following a safety?"

He wasn't asking about a fair catch and free kick for a FG.

For 37 seasons, under NFHS Rules, a Free Kick following a safety, could score a 3-point Field Goal.
This included the 1943 season up thru and including the 1979 season.

Interesting footnote:
As Ralph already mentioned above, a punt was legalized for a Free Kick following a safety in 1969!
So... from 1969 thru 1979...Wow!!! I wonder if it ever happened???

 ^good

SEE everything that you CALL, but; Don't CALL everything you SEE!
Never let the Rules Book get in the way of a great ball game!

Respectfully Submitted;

AFRBRO (after further review by the replay official)......

 1972 Rules Book -pg. 42 :

    8-4  Goal from the Field

     8-4-1a : The field goal attempt shall be a place-kick or drop kick from a scrimmage-kick; or from a free-kick other than a kick-off or A PUNT following a safety.

It appears that the eagle-eyed Football Committee realized this possibility back then and put the brakes on any punt that may have been caught in a prevailing tailwind. For KWH's information, our state reps were :
   Maine - Phillip R. Mealey
   Oregon - Edward J. Ryan

PS : In 1948 ,if a drop kick was used as a return kick, a field goal could be scored. :) The return kick was eliminated in our code in 1965. If you get the proper channel, you can still see a return kick used for a good reason. Post holiday question of the day:

 When might you see a return kick used and what is usually the reason???

A good old fashioned CFL kickout. A team trying to prevent surrendering a rouge would try a return kick to get the ball back out f the end zone. Here's a great example: https://youtu.be/d5BFaykcxGg

Congrats, Legacy Zebra, you win aWaRd tR:oLl aWaRd. While the NFHS never had a rouge, there were times when things looked glum for the return man. He could just pull up and punt/drop-kick it back :o :o , OR make a fair catch and place-kick it. The free kick after a fair catch was an offshoot of the return kick.
