Hardest Rules to Forget
« on: April 30, 2018, 10:24:18 PM »
In another subject, we have discussed rules that are the hardest to remember.  Here are some that are hard to forget:

Hash marks bisect the yard lines.  (Rule was changed the year following its introduction.)

On free kicks, there shall be at least 4 players on each side of the kicker from the RFP until the ball is  kicked.  (Rule was changed the year following its introduction.)

Live ball fouls by B are declined by rule when the play results in a touchdown by A.  (Rule was eventually changed.)

AFD for DPI.
I'd second that, 'Bama. fortunately 85% of DPI's create a new series. IMHO, the problem arises when the distance is halved. Possible solutions :
 (1) Reinstate AFD but not LOD on OPI. Rationale being DPI only needs AFD 15% of the time while LOD on OPI happened 100% of time.
 (2) Add AFD to intentional DPI to prevent B from the intentional foul to prevent a TD when within the halve the distance turf. This obscure call could once again raise it's head.

I "third" Bama, and would agree with AFD for DPI, without LOD for OPI. It works in the NFL and NCAA, it doesn't require complicated technoligy, and would reduce confusion for those not so well-versed in rules differences.

AFD for DPI.

I am pretty content with where the NFHS is at on this one.
Currently you get a 15-yard penalty for DPI and you get to repeat the down. I'm sorry but if that 15 yards didn't get you a first down, you likely didn't deserve a 1st down!

I get the goal to go situational arguments, but in every one of those scenarios the offense is granted the right to repeat the down.

Never let the Rules Book get in the way of a great ball game!

Once again, stressing the differences in maturity, physical capability, training, strategies, tactical awareness and overall objectives creates the practical and logical necessity of subtle differences between governing rules for Interscholastic level players and those participating in NCAA and NFL level competitions.

Confusion, "for those not so well-versed in rules differences." can be consistently eliminated, by those confused, simply waiting for, and subsequently being informed of and accepting the correct explanations that are presented by the game officials (of the contest they're observing).

AFD for DPI.

In every pregame meeting I tell my crew to make certain I don't screw this up. I'm scared to death of the day where I award an AFD for DPI out of sheer habit.
