Mechanics Question - Keys
« on: October 18, 2017, 08:07:48 AM »
Ignore for the moment the differences between states and the intention of keys (i.e. initial or prolonged). What I'd like to know is how each state determines where the various officials are looking.

Right now, those using the NFHS manual have the BJ with the first key on the strong side, widest eligible.  Consideration is given to the wide side of the field as well. Finally, balanced formations receive strong side benefit on the LJ's side. Is that how everyone is doing it?

I don't know anyone who does that mechanic by the book. Here BJ picks tight end or slot receiver nearest the middle on strong side. However, this has a lot of flexibility in 5 man and the BJ should adjust appropriately given the exact defensive formation (i.e. who is pressed or threatened).

NY uses the book mechanic; this is what evaluators on state playoff games are looking for.

Arkansas: by the book, except for a small renegade group who think they can do as they please.

Maine goes by the book. I've found that once you start to make exceptions then in becomes an exception when someone doesn't want an exception. Plus, I'm lazy ....

MS goes by the book.
OAN, I wish FEd would develop a 6-man mechanics section. We have several crews in our area running 6-man.

NC goes by the book, except for a couple years ago when they had the BJ take the inside guys in trips when it was outside in all other formations since that doesn't make any sense. Fortunately, they fixed the book.

To paraphrase a classic line from Blazing Saddles,

Keys?  We don't need no stinkin' keys!

Full disclosure - this position on the use of keys is not yet widely accepted in many parts of the country.

Can't say that the state here has preferred mechanics, but we as as association have our own mechanics for 5-man, 6-man, and 7-man crews.  Yes, our association has enough officials that our "city" schools all get 7-man crews.

PA is 6-man (mostly).  SJ and FJ have #1.  HL and LJ have #2 and #3.

Where is the "6th man" in PA positioned?  Do you have a SJ and FJ, but no BJ?  Just curious.

Yes, SJ and FJ both positioned on the sideline no BJ in the middle of field.

Welcome to the forum, Blackbear, we hope you find it both enjoyable and informative. Glad to hear you guys follow the manual as ,IMHO, it gives everyone a same page to be on. Your handle (an ole' CB term) interested me as to if you were a former member of the University of Maine Black Bears?
