Title: Is the thumb a finger ??? (T/F)
Post by: Ralph Damren on April 12, 2018, 12:09:38 PM
Without any Friday night lights to discuss, we football junkies are often challenged with finding topics. Last night I was perched in my Attila - the - Hun recliner, hunting dawg at my side, DirecTV on mute, transistor radio turned to Sox/Yanks (while the picture is bounced off a satalite ,the radio is 10 seconds ahead - let's you know when to pay attention). I began to lose interest when the bad guys got up 8-1 and began to thumb through our rules book. IT WAS THEN THAT I DISCOVERED THE FOLLOWING.....

1-5-2B NOTE 1 :

  ".........THE THUMB IS NOT CONSIDERED A FINGER."

 :( :o ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :'( :!# :bOW :puke:

I don't know about you guys, but I've always considered my thumb a finger. I base my assumption on the following expressions :

 "Give me five!" not give me four and one.
 "Taken on the five finger discount" (slang for shoplifting)
 "We have 10 fingers and ten toes" ...the big toe is considered a toe, should not the thumb be considered a finger ??? ??? ??? ?

Per chance, an editorial change could be written : "FOR THE SPIRIT OF THIS RULE, the thumb is not considered a finger."

A Sox player hit a grand slam, and later a fight, brought my attention back to baseball. Excepting the catcher and first baseman, all the players were wearing five-fingered gloves....or was it 4-fingered with a thumb gloves.  :!# :!# :!# :!# .......

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor as to fumbling through my football rules book during the off-season :o 8] . Lobster ale (produced by the Belfast Bay Brewing Co.) is my choice on weeknight Sox-Yanks games.

Only time will tell if the  :thumbup "What's a thumb?"  :thumbup debate will ever reach the magnitude of 1-2-3d "The inbounds lines shall be marked so that each 5-yard line BISECTS the hash mark." ;that became the concern of many only a few years ago.

Endless argument about nothing, can serve as an escape from necessary discussion about something.

1-5-2B NOTE 1 :

  ".........THE THUMB IS NOT CONSIDERED A FINGER."

I find NOTE1 to be confusing at best.
Does this NOTE stand for the entire Rules Book?
Does this NOTE imply how some may wish to convey there thoughts?

Say (just for example) we were having a discussion regarding the 40 SECOND CLOCK:
While some may wish to give the 40 Second clock a Two Thumbs UP; others, well,
Others may wish to simply give the 40 Second Clock a Two Fingered Salute.
So then, if The Thumb is not considered a Finger, it may well stand to reason the 40 Second Clock is doomed from the start???

Further interpretation may be required here!

Ralph, we may well need a Kentucky Casebook Situation to clear this up!

Edit: Ralph - If you are going to the trouble of adding a Casebook Situation,
perhaps work in some "unaltered plain cloth" covering only the thumb but not the fingers!

Another example to support Ralph's theory.....sometimes a certain profane expression is called a "middle finger salute", if there are 4 fingers then one can't be in the middle, that's just a space.....maybe Spock's "live long and prosper" has a different meaning?

Once again, Mom was spot on, "An idle mind is the devil's workshop".
:) We now know how those 24/7 sports channels feel (NFL, MLB, etc) during their off-seasons  :) !!!

Some sayings my dad shared in my daze of youth.....

"Sports is the tonic that washes away the perils of life."

"You need to hit a lot of home runs before they'll call you a slugger;
You need to score a lot of touchdowns before they'll call you Mr. Touchdown;
BUT you need to rob only one bank before they'll call you a bank robber."

"You'll feel sorry that you have no shoes until you meet a man who has no feet."

"You need only to add a 'h' and take out a 'n' and winner turns into whiner ,when you have a pity party NO one will come."

"The trouble with lying is you need to remember what lie you told to who, the truth is the truth and can be told to everyone."

"What part of 'NO' is it that you don't understand, the 'N' or the 'O'?"

"The thing about excuses is that only losers need to use them".....these may have formed the foundation of my demented mind  :o 8] ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :-* :'( >:D

FOOTBALL WILL BE HERE SOON,GUYS tR:oLl

The other ones are good, but that one is the king of them all.  Never lie, and always do what is right, and you will always come out OK.  Can't say I've lived that perfectly, but when I have, it has never failed.

Good message.
