Blocked or touched field goals / tries
« on: August 20, 2017, 06:56:45 PM »
Just want to make sure I am clear on the rules

An extra point try that is blocked by the defense or if the kicker kicks the ball into the back of the offensive linemen, the ball is dead as it is appanent the try not be successful.  Correct?

On a field goal from the 40 yard line, the kick is short of the goal line it comes to rest at the 10 yard line. B does not have to return the kick (but could if they wanted to) and once the ball is blown dead, it is B's ball first and 10 at the 40 or is it B's ball at the 10?

Any field goal that is touched by A or B in the expanded neutral zone and goes beyond the zone is ignored, correct?

The ball is dead on a kick try as soon as it is evident that the kick failed. The kick has to fail, not the snap. On the field goal, the ball remains live until it is dead by rule. If the receiving team lets the ball die at the 10, it is the receivers ball at the 10.

Basically an unsuccessful field goal is the same result as a punt, correct?

A field goal is basically treated like a punt that can score points.

On the field goal, the ball remains live until it is dead by rule. If the receiving team lets the ball die at the 10, it is the receivers ball at the 10.

But you wouldn't blow the whistle to kill the play if the ball lands at the 10 on a field goal. This is still a LIVE BALL.

If anyone is moving towards the ball or attempting to acquire the ball, just sit there and watch the ball and let the play complete. If the kicking team recovers, they have downed the ball, if the receiving team recovers, they can advance, fumble, whatever.

Only if nobody is going towards the ball, like everyone thinking the play is over, then kill the play, and give the ball to the receiving team where the ball is (the 10 yard line). In the NFHS, there is no such thing as moving the ball back to where it has been kicked like the NFL and NCAA.

If a field goal from the 40 yard line is missed wide-right through the back of the end zone, this is a TOUCHBACK. The ball is placed on the 20, not the 40.

There are a surprisingly large number of fans that believe a missed field goal attempt is a dead ball when it hits the ground.  That also includes those announcing the games at high school stadiums.

Not just the fans.  Some coaches think that also.  Had a varsity game a few years ago where they tried a 40 yard FG.  Lousy kick.  Rolled dead at the 3 yard line with no receivers making an attempt to field it.  One of the kickers downed it.  Receivers head coach threw a fit because we gave his team the hall at the 3 rather than "the spot of the kick".

IMHO, an eager tweeter sounding his whistle on a live kick on a short/blocked field goal is the worst kind of IW z^ z^ pi1eOn z^ z^. A then "do over" may well result in 3 points. Those 3 points may determine the outcome. ET (eager tweeter) should not only supply post game refreshments for his crew eAt& eAt& eAt& eAt& eAt&, but buy hot dogs for all on R's sideline :!#.

MORAL OF RANT : There are many more PAT kicks that FG attempts. We've all been schooled to kill the play once we see that the PAT kick isn't good. We NEED TO remind ourselves that a FG is a different critter....it's like a punt...hold our whistles and tweet it as such. Our internal signal ,as a reminder, is to wiggle our whistles when in FG formation.

PAT and FG only the BJ should kill the play, R in case of block no one else. This decreases the chance of a IW. Block and subsequent run wings.

That's the best way I've found to think of it.  If the kick doesn't go through the uprights for three points, it's a punt.

Supposedly, several years ago, one of our local schools didn't have a punter, and used a "field goal attempt" to punt the ball.

Another way to put it: a FG attempt is a scrimmage kick that can score points.
