Passer facemasked behind the line
« on: August 30, 2017, 10:42:53 AM »
1st and 10 at the 50 yard line.  A-12 takes the shotgun snap and drops back to pass.  Blitzing LB B-55 as he's being blocked reaches over the blocker and grabs A-12 by the facemask taking him to the ground at the A-40 yard line. We've got an immediate flag for PF-Facemask.

What is the penalty enforcement?  Down, distance, and rule(s) reference please.

This is a running play. PFFM enforced from end of run = 1st & 5 @ B-45.

If the QB was smart, he could have dropped the ball (fumbled) or threw the ball into an area where he had a receiver which now makes it a loose ball play.  Would be enforced from the previous spot 1/10 from the B35.

IMO, if a passer has his facemask grabbed (much less twisted/turned) during his throwing motion, an incomplete pass even not in the vicinity of an eligible receiver will not be IG. Can't expect him to get that pass directed to where he wants it to go. You're right though, he would be smart to throw the ball if he could react that quickly.

Only if the QB is 110% sure a flag will be thrown.  He'd look pretty stupid if he intentionally fumbled, B recovered, and there was no flag.

Of course, using previous spot enforcement would make all this silliness moot.
