Personal Foul on (Running) QB
« on: November 02, 2014, 03:29:43 PM »
Saw this in a game last Saturday.

QB, in shotgun, bobbles and then drops the snap. He then dives onto the ground onto the ball. Defensive man comes in and hits him on the ground. Obviously, this was a dead ball personal foul and it was called as such.

Question: Is this an automatic first down?

This was a half the distance penalty where the yardage was NOT enough for a first down. Referee awarded automatic first down.

Likely depends on which rules code you're playing under. Under NFHS NOT an automatic 1st Down.

If you were in Texas or Mass using NCAA rules that is correct.  PF's carry an automatic first down.

Under NFHS code, the only fouls that come with an automatic first down are the "roughing the..." fouls - roughing the passer, roughing the snapper, roughing the kicker or roughing the holder.

We can't have roughing the passer without a legal pass being thrown.
