What If the Holy Roller Didn't Count?
« on: September 21, 2024, 10:07:44 PM »
Those of us who are football fans know about the controversial Holy Roller play. The Raiders have the ball at the Chargers 14 yard line with 10 seconds left. Ken Stabler fumbles the ball forward (he appears to pitch the ball forward, underhanded), followed by Pete Banaszak attempting to scoop the ball and bat it. Dave Casper then kicks the ball into the end zone and falls on it for a  ^TD with no time left. We all know that the Raiders win the game when Errol Mann converts the try and the rules get changed in the offseason to prevent this play from happening again (NFL allows only the fumbler to recover on 4th down and after the 2-minute warning, NCAA introduces the 4th down fumble rule, which also applies to tries). What would happen if Jerry Markbreit and company correctly rule the fumble by Stabler as an ^no pass? Would the NFL and NCAA still introduce the 4th down fumble rule, or would the ruling that a forward fumble is an incomplete pass be enough of a deterrent for teams attempting something similar in the future?

Well, almost all non safety-related rules changes happen because a team got a perceived unfair advantage.

Or to give TV more ad minutes. nAnA

Was automatic first down for DPI an original part of the rules, or was it added later? I could easily imagine that being added in response to a DPI in a goal to go situation not allowing a team to score, followed by the offense not convertingon the next play.

bama_stripes, you are saying that the rules would not change if the Holy Roller was called correctly?

Yep.  Until someone takes advantage of a loophole in the rules, there’s no need for a change. ( fumblerooski, A11 offense, etc)

In NFHS and in Maine, an intentional fumble is treated as an illegal forward pass. ^flag

'Spect ya would only see such on a 4th down play  :!#

'Spect LOD on IFP would give the ball to them other guys   :puke:

Ayuh, 'spect a seasoned NFL QB would be a better actor than a high school kid  tR:oLl
