Free Kick Play - Illegal Kicking
« on: November 29, 2024, 03:07:13 PM »
Opening kick of 2nd half.  K kicks off and R-18 muffs the kick at the R15 yard line.  Ball is rolling toward the sideline and EZ as R-18 is tracking it hoping it goes into the EZ.  Ball nearly comes to rest at the R3 yard line where K-25 is about to attempt recovery of the loose ball when R-18 intentionally kicks the loose ball with the ball going OB at the R2 yard line.  Flag is down at the R3 yard line for Illegal Kicking. What options do we offer K's HC?

I’m without books today, but I’ll take a stab:
Either (accept) 10 yds from previous spot & rekick, or
(decline) R 1/10 from the R2.

That would be my ruling.

Generally stated, any live ball foul (to exclude non-player or unsportsmanlike) by R before the end of a free kick has those two options, correct? Either, enforce from the previous spot and rekick or decline and take the result of the play?

So as a follow-up here, would you as the R offer the enforcement options here to the K coach?  Or would you simply signal the Illegal Kicking foul, signal penalty declined, then spot the ball at the R2?  This does appear to be one of those "when the choice is obvious" calls IMHO.

I'm giving the options as a courtesy.

Here's a good follow up -- lets say R18 successfully (illegally) kicks the ball into the end zone. How long will you spend explaining to K's coach that the result of the play is not a safety?

Depends on if he wants to take a timeout or not. If not, I'm simply stating that "BY RULE, the result of the play is a touchback. You can decline the penalty and let them have it at the 20, or you can take the penatly and rekick."

We can't the tack-on rule, guys, the penalty could be enforced from the 20. R could have the ball 1/10 @ R's 30.

Not too often I disagree with Ralph, but this is a foul by R, not K. We can tack on the K foul, but not R. Furthermore, we'd move it back 10 yards, not forward.

:-[  Good catch, NCwingman, I can offer two excuses :

(1) Being left-handed, I often git things bass ackwoods.  :!#

(2) Saturday night was our "Referee's Ball" , a great evening with our wives/girlfriends. Often our wives/girlfriends become designated drivers for the journey home   :bOW.

My post came after a morning of dead brain cells. This coming Saturday is again a gathering of  z^ as one is a manager of Pepsi. Pepsi has a skyview box for UMaine hockey games.  The box will be fullof  z^ then. Drinks & grub are included...only requirement is : rum & Pepsi NOT rum & Coke  :bOW.  Several of us have season tickets. Our wives/girlfriends will be using them and again become designated drivers  :bOW.

The fun/enjoyment of football officating extends way beyond the football field. tiphat:

OH, by the way, we can't have PSK on free kicks   ^flag
