Quiz 10
As always, check me.
1. 2/10 @ B-40. A12’s entire body and the ball is beyond the neutral zone when he throws a pass downfield and B75 is in the neutral zone at the snap. B21 intercepts the pass at the B-10, and B55 blocks below the waist at the B-20 during the return. B21 is tackled at the 50.
RULING:
A, 2/10, B-40, ready (25).
A12 commits a foul for an illegal forward pass (thrown from beyond the NZ). This Team A foul will offset B75’s offside foul, and B21’s illegal block below the waist foul. Because of B55’s offside foul (prior to the change of team possession), Team B does NOT have the ability to invoke the “clean hands” provision for penalty enforcement. So, the down will be repeated at the previous spot. Note that, since Team B will NOT next snap the ball, the game clock will start on the referee’s signal.
2. Free Kick @ A-35. During the kick, B50 holds at the B-30 and the untouched kick goes out of bounds at the B-3.
RULING:
A, free kick, A-35, free kick timing (25).
B50’s holding foul is offset by Team A’s illegal kick out of bounds foul.
The ball is still in team A’s possession during a free kick, so Team B does NOT have the ability to invoke the “clean hands” provision for penalty enforcement. So, the down will be repeated at the previous spot.
3. Free Kick @ A-35. B44 receives the kick at the B-5 and returns the ball for a touchdown. Substitutes B21, B80, and B88 leave the Team B team area, and with no impact on the play and no intention of entering the game, run to the end zone to congratulate B44.
RULING:
B, try, A-18, no clock (25), OR B, try A-3, with the succeeding kickoff at the B-20.
The actions by B21, B80, and B88 constitute a single dead-ball, unsportsmanlike conduct foul, which may be penalized on the try, or at the spot of the succeeding kickoff. Each of three team players have a UNS charged to their ejection ‘counter.’
4. 2/10 @ B-15. A86 is legally blocked out of bounds by B18 at Team B’s two-yard line. A86, while attempting an immediate return to the field of play, leaps from out of bounds and is airborne as he receives A16’s legal forward pass. He lands in Team B’s end zone with the ball firmly in his grasp.
RULING:
3/10, B15, snap (40 and running).
Even though A86 was blocked out of bounds, he is, nonetheless, out of bounds, and must “re-establish” himself inbounds before he can successfully complete a catch. Because he is, officially, out of bounds while airborne, the ball is dead when A86 touches it, and the down is over. This is an incomplete pass, so the ball is placed at the previous spot for 3rd down.
5. Try @ B-3. A98’s kick is blocked by B55, and B80 recovers the ball at the B-10 and advances across Team A’s goal line. During B80’s run, B21 blocks A98 below the waist at the B-10.
RULING:
A, kickoff, A-35, free kick timing (25).
Unless flagrant, personal fouls by either team after a change of team possession during a try are declined by rule, and the try is over.
6. 4/10 @ A-6. A98’s punt is fair caught at the B-40. Team A is flagged for having two players wearing Number 11.
RULING:
A, 4/9, A-3, snap (25) (not likely), OR B, 1/10, B-45, snap (25) (most likely).
Distance penalties for fouls by Team A that occur during the kick play portion of a legal scrimmage kick down may be enforced at the previous spot, and the down is repeated, OR, they may be penalized at the spot where the dead-ball belongs to Team B, which Team B would most likely accept, in this case.
7. 3/Goal @ B-6. Ball carrier A21, advancing toward Team B’s goal line, fumbles when B55 bats the ball forward from A21’s hand. A21 loses possession at the B-2, and the ball goes into Team B’s end zone, where B44 recovers.
RULING:
B, 1/10, B-20, snap (25).
B55’s striking of the ball is legal, and simply results in a fumble by A21. B44’s recovery of the ball in B’s end zone results in a touchback, because the impetus on the ball was from A21’s fumble.
8. 1/10 @ A-25. Quarterback A11 drops back in the pocket and sets up to pass. He then scrambles to his right, sets up again at the A-20 and is in a passing posture when he is hit by end B98 who drives his shoulder into A11’s knee. A11 then pulls the ball in and goes to the ground because of being tackled by B88 at the A-20.
RULING:
A, 1/10, A-35, ready (25).
When a player is in a passing posture anywhere on the field of play or end zones, forcible contact at, or below, the knee(s) by an unabated opponent is a foul. Assuming B98 was unabated, B98 commits a foul for roughing the passer (even though A11 did not throw a pass). Since the end of the related run was behind the Previous Spot, the 15-yard penalty is enforced from the Previous Spot, which, in this case, and includes the award of a new series (“first down”).
