NCAA “Officially Offline”
(1/1)
ElvisLives:
First, I’m sad to have learned two knew terms today: 1)”…officials ecosystem.”, and 2)”…social media hygiene…”
Those are both used in the document distributed by the NCAA, today, offering NCAA officials guidance and direction in avoiding negative impacts from their presence on social media and other elements of the digital universe. Sad that this needs to be addressed, and even sadder that there are reasons for concern.
I know that this is not a new phenomenon. During my FBS days, I knew officials (a small number) that received telephone threats in reaction to games in which they were involved (even when they weren’t directly involved in any perceived controversial events during the game).
But, the concern clearly indicates a trend of increased potential (if not actual) threats and widespread public criticism of officials. I can’t help but wonder how coincidental this trend may be with the infusion of the gambling industry into college football (and all sports, in general). I fear that there will be incidences of officials, or their families, being physically harmed/killed by unscrupulous actors in the gambling industries. (Are there any ‘scrupulous’ actors in that industry?)
Who would have ever thought any of us would have to worry about “social media hygiene?”
I fear for the future of legitimate sports officiating.
Etref:
Not just by those betting on the outcome but also just nut jobs who feel their team was “cheated “ by the officials.
