On the cold and windy days, I have the following statement at our pre-game home plate meeting : "Science tells us that many things shrink when cold. The opposite is true for strike zones.

Tell your kids to come up to the plate ready to hit.

" Their response is usually : "AYUH, 'Spect so"
Back before the turn of the century , NFHS added the 10 run rule, it first came to use in an early game.
SCENE: 45 minutes into the game, a home hitter hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 5th making it 11-0

. When we announced the game being over, both coaches pleaded that they hadn't used their bench and couldn't we keep playing

. In this sue-happy world of today, we would just have walked away and smiled

. BUT we chatted

and decided to offer only calling out/safe, fair/foul.with 11-0 being the final score.

The kids were excited and all came up swinging. the 2 remaining innings were completed in a little over 10 minutes. The visiting coach - whose team had a 2 hour bus journey to look forward to - thanked us , saying those last two innings were the most fun his players had had this season

.
EPILOGUE: While the idea of high school sports is kids having fun, if this situation occurred today, I would tell the coaches that once we leave they can do anything they want.
