Look at :27 left in the first quarter
OU db called for targeting and disqualified.
Replay overturn disqualification but not sure it was even targeting
Thanks Tx MIke

That's the whole problem with the replay. If it's not to the head, by definition, it's not targeting. When the R announces the player is not ejected, in essence he's saying the call on the field was incorrect.

Got it. This is what "they" (rules committee" anted and this is what they got. Flag it and let IR work it out. Great if you have IR Not so great if you don't. They had the conference we have been told ot have after 1 of these but did not seem like the F and S were giving any input. Not much value in a conference if we don't CONFERENCE

Am I the only one who's against these new rules? I honestly think the targeting thing is really unnecessary, and a lot of people are saying it's just out of fear of being sued.
What they really needed to do was make the whole penalty reviewable. Why overturn the ejection if the 15-yard penalty is not negotiable? What I saw in the ejection during Cal/Northwestern is that the player shouldn't have even been called for roughing the passer. NCAA D1 officials don't even take into consideration the fact that when your momentum is carrying you one way, you're not going to have room to avoid the quarterback.
The other thing I don't even begin to understand is what is accomplished by making players sit out a play if their helmet comes off.

Players are not tightening their helmets so they came up with something punitive to incentivize them to do it. I don't think it's had the desired effect.

I would be interested to see the number of helmets that came off before the rule change compared to now.

Same play in Ala vs A&M game. 'Bama DB going for the ball accidentally contacted A&M receiver in head with his shoulder. Overturned by replay, but the 15-yd penalty stood.

No change last year v previous years. The rule is ineffective.
-
Does the official get a Incorrect Call grade on that play???

Thats interesting, but I'm not sure you can call it ineffective after just 1 season. Ir will have been in fir 3 years at the next regular rule change, I think that will be a pretty good gauge on the effectiveness of the rule.

My comment was directed to the question of whether the helmet off rule made a difference...it hasn't. IR doesn't have a play in that situation.

One thing different from this year vs last year on helmets. The players are no longer surprised when we tell them to go off for one play. They know and they just start heading for the sideline.

Oops, I was on mobile and meant "it" referring to the helmet rule not "Ir". And like I said, I don't think one season is enough to go on.

If it was truly punitive we would have seen fewer because a player wouldn't want to leave the field. It wasn't enough motivation if the same number came off even in year 1. If it didn't motivate them last year why would the next year or 2 change it? 10-second runoff may do it but that requires it to happen in the last minute of the half.

I had a new official asking me about why the helmet rule was brought in.
Here in Germany we see (at least in my area) a helmet come off maybe 1 time in 15 games - so it is not an issue here, and I told him about the frequency with you guys. His jaw got a little slack when he heard it.
