Title: First week of the season
Post by: metroump on August 19, 2014, 12:31:21 PM
Here in Alabama this is week one for us.  All schools will have 11 weeks to get in 10 games.  They can either choose to play a jamboree or scrimmage game this week or play a game that counts.  We also have 7 classifications in AL now.

Next week (Aug 28-30) is "Week 1" in Georgia.  However, if a team has a scheduling "problem" (a very loosely described term), they can petition to play in "Week 0", which starts this week (over 50% of schools are playing in week 0).  If you start in Week 1, you have 11 weeks to play 10 games.  If you start in Week 0, you have 12 weeks to play 10 games.

In NC this is Week 1 of 12 weeks.  The normal schedule is 10 games.  An 11th game- an endowment game- can be played.  The host school must send a set percentage of the gate to the state athletic association's endowment fund (mostly used to help pay catastrophic insurance policies for the schools).  In return, the school may drop one non-conference loss off their record for playoff seeding.

In the past we have had 10 weeks to play 10, 11 weeks to play 10 (11 if an endowment is scheduled) and now for the past couple of years 12 to play 10/11.

:!# WOW,you guys south of Mason-Dixon start early!! Our first allowable scrimmage is next Monday, with the following weekend having  exhibition games. The regular season starts the weekend following Labor Day and ends with championship games for our four classes the Friday/Saturday before Thanksgiving. The attire of vogue for zebra and fan alike includes ear muffs/ LLBean woolies and gloves. Some coaches sill wear shorts. Enjoy your season, everyone.

Well, school started July 28 for some districts, the following Monday for others.  If we have school, we should have football.

First games of the year around here are Friday (private schools/homeschool and a couple of benefit games).  The first official games for the public schools are next week.  11 weeks to play 10, if I recall correctly.

With the heat index approaching 100-105, Arkansas schools are glad  cRaZy is scrimmage week. Week 1 is Labor Day week: 10 weeks to play 10 games.

Only 7 weeks of 7 games here in New York. Budget cuts have slashed games over the past few years. Plus we work 4 man varsity games. It's getting ridiculous.

School starts in JULY :!# :!#??? How are the kids going to be able to go to the beach in August ??? Dec 12-13 is usually the kickoff of the snowmobile/snowshoe/sled season. Water boys are replaced by a brandy-toting St. Bernard.

Regular season start this Friday in Mississippi, had Jamborees last Friday and Saturday.  Thankfully we are expecting a cold front on Friday and highs will only be 96 degrees with a heat index of 105. (But its a wet heat with 100% humidity.)

Western PA starts next week.  9 week regular season (no bye weeks).  4 week district playoffs (16 teams per classification). 3 weeks state playoffs (championship of district playoff is first round of state tournament).

Last week and this week are set scrimmages between teams on Friday/Saturday.

Here in WV, practice started last Monday the 11th.  This weekend is one final scrimmage week.  First week for contest is next week.  There are 11 weeks in our season. Teams must play 9 games to be eligible for playoffs.  Most schedule 10.  The way our playoff system works, its hard for a team that only plays nine games to make playoffs.  It ahs been done, but they better beat some top tier teams.

I have mixed feelings about this season.  Last year I was accused of cussing and shoving a kid.  The acusation was later withdrawn, but because of the accusation, I did not receive a playoff assignment.  The only reason I came back, when schedules were released, my crew has some of the best games in the state this year.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Every game we officiate is the best game those players will play that week. Don't lose sight of the hard work put in by all players and coaches. It is an honor to be involved with their game.

You would need to be from a state where rain turns from a liquid to a solid as a routine. Once the ground turns white, you can : (1) Play in it; (2) Shovel it and swear at it; (3) Go to Florida. I choose option #3. 8]

If some southern school districts had their way there would be no "summer vacation."

If I had my way, it would be 11 weeks on, 2 weeks off all year long.  Teachers spend WAY too long each fall catching kids up with what they learned last year but forgot over the summer.

There's a reason our students are falling far behind the rest of the developed world.

And, if I had my way, we would swap football season & baseball season in the South.  No heat-related deaths in football, no pitchers ruining their arms due to cold in baseball.

That would give new song material for Don Henley and Kenny Chesney.

Don't take my words out of context. The game we have that week is th most important, but what I mean is, the games that everyone int he state will have an eye on because of the teams involved.

Friday begins Week 0 here in Florida.  Real games, but they don't count as part of a teams official record. Aug 29 is the first Friday of the regular season. That ends on Nov 7.  When actual "football weather" rolls into the sunshine state, we're about done.

Out here in Cali we have scrimmage this Saturday. Aug 29 is Week 0. Used to have just a few teams play Week 0. Now over half due so we have 11 weeks to play ten games. State Championship games will are either the second or third weekend of December. If you make it to State Championship you play a complete NFL season of 16 games in 17 weeks.

Wisconsin started playing games this week.  Schools could play their first game as early as Thursday, 8/21, but most opted for Friday, 8/22.  Most schools will play 2 games before school starts.  We have a law in Wisconsin (really!) which essentially prohibits schools from starting classes before Labor Day.  We have 9 weeks for 9 games.  Playoffs consist of 5 rounds with championship games on the Friday and Saturday before Thanksgiving.  I have never heard the term "Week 0" until seeing on this forum.

I have no idea where it started, but we have been using it here for a number of years.  The state sets "week 1" as the opening weekend.  As teams have had trouble getting games scheduled, and as more of these marquee TV matchups get scheduled, teams wanted to start earlier than week 1.  You had to petition the state with a reason to be able to start in week 0.  Now, over 50% of schools play week 0 games, so I think we should really consider renumbering our weeks!

So, it turns out that I had two of the defending state champions Friday night.  (VA divides the independent schools into 4 divisions.)  The game was 22-0 after the first, 30-3 at the half, 42-3 at the end of the third, and 49-3 for the final.  Yikes.

The reality of High School football, "Last year's results", may often turn out to be only a fond memory of times LONG GONE.

As a guy that works baseball and football, I have said that for years.

Virginia has one, Tom - we run the clock any time in the second half when the score differential is 35 or higher.  :)
